I am looking on behalf of my brother. He lost his lab just after new year, and has decided he is now ready to start looking for a new dog. He has tried rescue centres, but they are far too interogating, and as he works FT (his partner does not, and when they are both working, pup will go to my parent's to be looked after) they wont consider him for a rescue.

Basically he is looking for a lab, or lab type dog, doesn't have to be pedigree. He really wants a black, but would consider a yellow. Under 3 years old, so doesn't have to be a pup either. Bitch or dog, no preference.

He has his own large house, with big garden, which backs onto a large wood. The dog would never be left alone - if him and his OH are working, dog would go to my parents.

He lives near Horsham, in West Sussex, and I live near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, so we are looking around either area. Everything we have found so far on ad-trader, friday ad etc has already been sold/rehomed.

That's a shame

Lab rescue were a bit stuck up when he spoke to them - he had Benson for about 8 years, and he was around 16 when he died (he came from Dogs Trust - seems their policies have changed!). He knows what he is doing, has everything a dog could ever want at home, and our older brother is a dog trainer/handler for security firms, so he would have lots of help etc. But it seems rescue charities now just want to rehome to the 'stay at home' wife families

I'm afraid it does have to be a lab, or look like a lab - he is very fussy.

Argh, I know it is a whole other debate, but it sounds like he could offer a great home - if people don't work, how are they supposed to afford things like vets bills/insurance?!
I nearly choked when I saw B's bill from last summer, it was over £500, if me and my mum didn't work, what would have happened to him???

Which labrador rescue did he try? I got my girl from these people last year and they were very helpful and very pleasant. Another lab rescue place wouldn't consider us because we have young children. We are totally thrilled with our 'new' girl.

I know of a chocolate chap that might be looking for a family to live with as he is a bit boingy for his current people.

I would try the Labrador Rescue Trust - will dig out contact details for you later if you like.

When talking to them I would edit the truth slightly - make it clear that the dog would never be left for more than 4 hours at a time. TBH it is one of the things that really annoys me as ittis totally unrealisitc - i know 'stay at home' mums that spend all day out shopping after dropping off kids etc and only come home when school is finished but that is a whole other thread.

When I spoke to them and they came to do home check I explained that I work from home and sometimes have to go out for meetings (luckily my local branch were quite realistic especially when they saw where I lived) and I explained that when I go out the dogs are left in the garden (is totally dog proof) but they have access to the boot room at the back were their beds are and the boiler so it is warm and dry. As people on here know they didn't even look in the house ( I had done housework!!

) or look at the boot room - home check was monday and Max-i-moo arrived on the Friday!

Lab rescue were great when my brother got his dog. They lost their old dog while my sis in law was pregnant, and got Alfie when the baby was about 6 months old. No other rescue would consider letting them have a rescue with a young child. Alfie is a fantastic dog.

I found them great too. Our Lab bitch came from them 7 years ago - my husband was working full time and I was at home which they were quite happy with. It's odd if they've changed their policies - I do think you just need to be persistent as at least one rescue organisation must be able to see sense?! Good luck anyway!
