Reposted in here as no joy in "competing and training"

I have a lovely new horse and now my confidence has improved I am joining my riding club, I am comfortable jumping up to 85 cm at present and do attempt the odd 90 (all unaffiliated obviously) but always jump a smaller round first - ie I cant go straight into 85 (too much of a wimp!)

Obviously in riding club I want to compete as novice sj, (75 first round - 85 2nd round) but my horse has winnings BS.

When i say winnings, he registered jumped 1 BS at Novice, won then i think threw a splint and did not compete any more. this was in Jan 2011. So now because he has £15 notional I cant compete him as a novice SJer unless I downgrade him.

I think it will be accepted as that is literally th only time he has done BS and I have never registered BS since being a junior (7 yrs +)

Has anyone experience of downgrading with riding club?
Will me boy then be down graded from BS too?
Will this stop us from registering BS in future?
Make him restricted at championships with RC?

I havenet done this before (obviously lol) so I am rather confused.

Any help would be appreciated!

thanks guys!

Do you have to downgrade or even tell the riding club? Are you competing under his affiliated name? I didn't think these things mattered to he honest and presumably he didn't do BS with you? I would chat to the riding club about it but I don't think there will be an issue

Yeah we have to declare as if not then technically grade a's could jump round novice / intermediate.
Horses that go to qualifiers get there names searched on BS / BD and BE and if club are "cheating" its disqualification, rider/horse suspention and £1000 fine to the club!

You won't have an issue at Riding Club locally, nor probably at a qualifier, but could potentially come a cropper at any championships if you use his name.

In view of his record it really shouldn't be an issue.

In your shoes, I would contact your local area representative for RC to take advice.

It is an issue though, he has winnings this makes him ineligible to compete area qualifiers in novice showjumping. Doing anything else (ie competing him under a different name - although I think you have to use passport names so they can check flu vaccs anyway would be against the rules even if noone noticed) and I cannot imagine a RC entering you if they knew.

Adults on under 14hh don't have it any better fwiw

Ah but there is a rule that they loose so much money for every year not registered I think which might be applicable ;) hang on! Somewhere in the depths of my memory it was 50 quid a year for RC.. cos we were waiting for one to become exempt!

I hope it is £50 per year as we are well clear. Im a bit huffed that I may not be able to over ameasly £15 and 1 show!
I knew it would come up at champs and even qualifiers - I wouldnt risk that I my club so if i knew it was wrong I wouldnt do it - I would hate other clubs to be doing this so why should I? (i have good morrals me :D)

will have a word with secretary tonight n dig out the rule book. xx

They appear to have changed the ruling

SJ1.1.4: Downgrading of winnings
For the purposes of the BRC rules, we refer to BS Notional winnings.
Applications for downgrading will be considered on an individual basis. Please download
an application form from www.britishridingclubs.org.uk
Winnings that have been downgraded as per the previous rules, up until 1 January
2011 when the new rule came into effect, will be honoured

You have to use passport name and you have to declare any winnings as you are not allowed any at novice. You also have to downgrade in time as they will check! It happened to another riding club in my area this year!

Isn't this all for area competition though? Just local level RC, they probably couldn't care less unless it says in the schedule that horse mustn't have winnings.

I am In exactly the same predicament.
My schoolmaster has BD points, BSJA money and BE points too!

We (me and RC) decided not to downgrade as I'm hoping to get to intermediate RC level soon, so not really worth it.

It is a shame tho, as like you, my boy has a few pounds/points nothing spectacular.

All horses who qualify for BRC championships are checked for eligibility and the passport name / number needs to be on the declaration form. If an ineligible horse is found to have qualified it is disqualified and resullts recalculated. There is no further disciplinary action and certainly not a £1000 fine!
Just apply for the downgrade - It's a simple, painless and free procedure, but if you are granted it you will lose it if you reregister, and it will only apply to you riding - if anyone else wanted to compete they would have to make a fresh application as each horse and rider combination are considered under their own merits.

Are we talking about rc team competitions or their local shows?

Obviously our teams have to run under the rules of the rc team competitions, but our local shows have rules for novice of "combination of horse and rider not to have won" so you would be able to enter at our shows. Obviously we hope that someone will be fair and not enter just to pot hunt on a grade A etc. Your other alternative is to enter non competitor for the lower classes, which will still allow you to get your confidence up before doing the bigger classes competitively.

You should only apply to BRC to downgrade if you intend to ride on your RC team in Area qualifiers. We recently had reminder that the process is not for other local or non qualifying competitions.
The BRC rulebook is available to read/download on BRC website (if you can navigate the bizarre BHS site!)
Flu records are rigorously checked at Area Qualifiers, and they really will eliminate people for even a minor discrepancy or a day late.
At least they have finally allowed adults to jump ponies.

Thank you everyone, just to clarify I will be competing on a team at area qualifiers etc withthe hope of attending championships so I will be applying for the downgrade. :D
