My mare is 11 yrs and is on a combined stabling routine. She is out overnight and in during the day. Today I brought her in and she seemed totally normal, keen for her haynet and breakfast! I groomed her this afternoon and noticed that by her teats, more udderish I guess, it was all extremely swollen, bleeding, oozing puss and driving her crazy!! To start with I thought it was just a reaction to mane & tail de-tangler, we've had this issue before!!! Then I noticed that it was pussing and continuining to leak onto the floor. I am concerned about what this is and have never seen anything like it!! I am assuming either mastitis or simply infected fly bites. I have cleaned it all and when I was drying her she was going mad for me to keep itching it for her as she obviously cannot get there!! I will monitor it throughout tomorrow and then call a vet, I just wondered if anyone has experienced this??

If I were you I'd ring the emergency vet now and ask their opinion about the necessity of a visit tonight. That sounds serious to me.

Can I say as well that I found your pink font extremely difficult to read and almost didn't bother?

You sure it's puss and not milk? Sorry don't mean to be patronising.

I also wouldn't wait and call someone soon for some advise over the phone

My mare has this kind of thing every summer. I'n her case it's a reaction to tiny little midgy things that bite around that area and all the way up the inside of her thighs. The tops crust over and if they are brushed/ scratched they ooze again. I slap a good old layer of sudocrem on the affected areas soothing the itchy bits and protecting from more bites. I'm her best friend when it's happening as I hold the key to itch relief!! If it's actual puss though a vet would be a good idea particularly if there's lots of flies around.

Bleeding & oozing pus to me says infection-vet now-only takes a second & thats what they are there for even if they passify you till morning.

May I ask were you spraying mane& tail conditioner down there directly or accidentally???? could well be an allergic reaction but I would not be taking chances with something so odd
