Hi

My Tb started coming in over night 2 weeks ago, last Monday morning one hind leg was slighty swollen around the front of his hock. Checked it over for cuts or knocks and found nothing, brought him back in that night and it was back to normal. Following morning was really swollen again, alot around the front of the hock and starting to go down the leg.

Had the vet out that afternoon, trotted him up and he was sound. Also flexion (sp?) tested and was sound. Vet didn't know what was wrong but gave him 7 days worth of bute. Leg much better and the swelling has stopped.

Now tonight I went to fetch him in, shouted for him and he usually bombs up to me. But he was stood resting his problematic hind leg and head down. He went to walk away and was very lame for about 4 strides on it and then was fine again??

He's not in work at the mo, due to needing a new saddle. Out on his own too.

I'm totally miffed!

Can any one help!.......Please x

Poss a bone chip? Floaters could cause only intermittent lameness but only way to diagnose would be x-ray.

Dependant on age may also be arthritic changes?

Just throwing up two possible causes in the absence of obv cut/knock

He's a 4 year old, so don't think it would be arthritic changes?

I hope its not a bone chip, but will mention to the vet on Monday. I'm having a terrible run of luck with horses at the mo. My last two horses have gone wrong, one with wobblers and the other with navicular....

Does sound odd:confused:
Bone chip is possible - at 4yo most likely from a floating OCD fragment (joint mouse!), but wouldn't account for the intial swelling.

Sounds like another check up may be in order :(

Good luck

I had very similiar last year.Took me ages to find but there was very tiny I mean miniscule cut on back leg around fetlock area. With all the wet weather early mud fever had set in. I started using fetlock boots and the potection stopped her knocking scab off and re infecting. We had swelling at night and the leg went down with excercise. If you need to protect it there is a product to keep away mud ,mud away or something similiar by nex tex.
Try and search in good light .I missed mine and it went to cellulitis and she needed anti biotics.
