My pony is rising 5, she has always been strong on the ground and ridden but never dangerous!!

Well today while doing trot work in the school she kept running off to the fence and slamming on her breaks!! I really can't stop! Just wondering for any suggestions.

Her saddle, teeth and back are all up to date. She is fed half a scoop of hi fi lite and half pony cubes with garlic.

She is ridden in a waterford and drop noseband OR a tom thumb with a flash!

Have thought about a grakle and heard that American gags are good for polll pressure and emergency stops??

ANy ideas??

weird, just read your post elsewhere

Just wondering....what does she do when she gets to the fence? Does she then stop?

Would have thought american gag little strong for a rising 5yo most likely she is confused by something - has anyone had a look from the ground?

maybe you'd be better working out WHY she's doing this than trying a stronger bit?

My pony (fell pony = strong when he wants to be!) can tank back to the gate in the school and it's pretty hard to stop him. He does it if he's pushed out of his comfort zone or if he's feeling lazy and just wants to stop working!

I have to try to get some bend in his neck to turn him away from where he wants to go before we get there, and then when he does get anywhere near where he wants to be, kick him on in the opposite direction. I also have to squeeze and release when he tanks, just hanging onto his mouth doesn't work.

Sorry if this is no help or I'm talking rubbish...I'm just a novice!!

i dont try and stop her any more i let her go, turn her round and start again cause the more i fight her the faster she goes!!

I think she does it to get back to her field mate (who cleverly sits the other side of the fence!!) I have tried no flash, snaffle, walk and trot lots of transitions and bend but it hasnt helped. I was recommended the waterford and was fab for a while (at the time it was tank off and head between knees bronking) thankfully hasnt done it for a while!!!

Thats sounds like your problem right there...she is running to her friend, herd bound. I would work that out first. Can you seperate them or work farther away from the other horse?

ok if she does that turn it into a schooling exercise. If all issues with possible pain have been explored. We actually deliberatly ride our horses to the edge of the school to teach them to stop and turn (polo). We will ride at the rails then sit to ask for the stop, as soon as they have stopped we ask them to reign back and turn. We start with a gently turn building up over a period of time to proper spins. If you turn what she is doing into an exercise she will probably decided that it is harder work doing the running to the fence than concentrating on what you are asking her to do. I find (personal thoughts) that if a horse is playing up and being naughty then I usually play on this and make them do it over and over till they are bored and then go back to usual schooling. I'm not saying this is right for all horses as they are all individuals but I find it works for me.

Good luck and keep us updated with your progress.

Sounds like she is running back to field mate for security. You have to be a firm but fair leader. At the moment she is feeling unsecure about things.

A stronger bit will not be the answer.

Enlist the help of a good trainer-Lewis Blackburn works regularly in your area

He will help you and your horse work together

good luck

Yep. I'd let her go where she wants, then make that a very busy place. Work her hard, maybe trot figure 8's and S shapes, then when she is pointing away from her friend, give her a long rein and offer her the chance to walk away for a rest. If she doesn't take up your offer to go away for a rest, work her some more until she realises that near her friend is a busy place, the other end of the school is quite nice after all. Then gradually re-introduce schooling using the whole school, no rush, she's still a baby.
I'm just wondering what you do with her during her working week. Does she hack out as well?

so despite the problem you have you have made good progress form bronking. what ever you decide to do you need to think of a long term solution ie be consistant and if you don't get the results straight away, keep at it, as you know from how far you ahve come, it will happen. work on getting her really listening to hand and leg, making sure when you ask her to go forward it is instantanous the same with stopping, always remember to release the pressure from either hand of leg as soon as she does what you ask, or if a new request as soon as she starts showing signs of what you want

I do lots of transiton work with her as she tends to rush so i try and make her anticipate the downwards transitons!!! When she behaves she is an angel and goes off your leg and stops on slight contact!

With her working week she does 2 sessions of lunging 20/25mins in either a pessoa or side reins (depending on what she has been like!!) 2/3 schooling sessions (one normally envolving a small jump to keep her occupied and 1/2 hacks. She works 6 days and has every friday off!!

I spoke to the YM that i work for and she said that putting her in a stronger bit to stop her running off would be good for now so she learns she cant run off!! She suggested a pelham or a type of Gag. And as she evades the bit possibly a grackle.

I am also goign to turn her away for 6 months in September so i thought if i rode her in a stronger bit to stop her running off then when i braught her back into work hopefully she will remember how to behave!!!

She is an angel out hacking, i ride out with others as she is very nappy on her own and doesnt have enough confidence so i dont push her, i always hack in my tom thumb and flash and i havnt had a problem pulling her up in this!!

turning it into an excersise does work but then she runs off another way
