I understand need to get a registration plate for the trailer that has the same number as the car - can I order it from any online number plate place, such as www.fancyplates.com? Are those legal? And presumably I only need a back one?

I am so sorry to be stupid!

We got ours off ebay, it is done in legal fonts and yes - you only need a back one.

As a temporary measure we printed the reg onto yellow paper (in the largest font we could fit onto an A4 piece of paper), put it in a plastic sleeve and taped it on.

Don't be tempted to make your own, or buy from e-bay, if you are stopped, it's an on-the-spot fine

Rubbish, you can purchase perfectly legal plates from ebay without any problem. They are sold as show plates purely to get around the need to produce a log book. They invariably are much cheaper. As long as the font used is correct there is nothing wrong with them.

only saying what i was told at Beaulieu Road 1st october by the police who stop the vehicles as they go in...

My "Show Plate" from Ebay is a perfectly standard yellow reflective number plate, absolutely no different to one from a shop. My problem is producing the ID. My passports expired, and as I operate under both my married and maiden names, I just can't get the two acceptable ID's in the same name.

Yes be carefull the police are clamping down on non standard plates,, while the goverment (DVLA) are selling personlised numbers that mean nothing if your not "creative" with spacing, bolt placement etc
