help......my horse as a skip....advice needed

i have a coloured gelding whose 4 this year hes been backed about 12 months now (before i got him) early i know, but this was because he was thought to be 12 months older than he actually is. Hes very well behaved when i ride him which is at the most a couple of times a week,and is usually just around the area he is fine then, goes through all the transitions quite well the problem is if i take him into the menage, i try to get him to do walk and trot on a circle and he puts a skip in in trot (only way i can describe it.). I think he changes leg because it unbalances me and throws me about like a bag of washin

he doesnt do it anymore on one rein than the other, sometimes he does it and other times he doesnt. My daughter as rode him and he does it with her too he does seem to find it hard to bend unless we put cones in the corners my thoughts are that maybe hes not ready yet and is too unbalanced but then its not like i make him do it every day at most once a week any thoughts advice greatfully received....sorry if bit long just trying to get as much info in as poss

I've found this a lot with unbalanced horses. What they are doing is trying to make you change the trotting diagonal to the one that is more comfortable for them. Its ofton caused by people only riding on one diagonal out hacking etc. I find doing lots of rein changes and remembering to change the diagonal loads out hacking helps to sort it out. Is he one of those horses that feels "wonky" when you change the diagonal?

Try changing your diagonal evry 3 or 4 strides, that helped a lot with Jack who used to do this. He has regular lessons now and his balance and bending have been worked on and he rarely skips now.

thanks to you and jacks mum for your replys and yes he does feel wonky so in your opinion would you persevere with this in the school as well as out hacking or is he just not ready to be schooled as yet?
