Help my horse goes mental when i take my other horse away from him!!!

I have 2 horses. One is semi retired and i have a competition gelding. We had huge problems last year when i brought my horses to live at our home and my retired gelding got too attached to my other gelding. In the end i had to have them at seperate yards. As soon as my event gelding had gone and i gave my retired gelding another friend he was fine and would let this new gelding leave him with no problems. So seemed to be an issue with my event gelding (Almost attention seeking behaviour). We have had to bring my event gelding back home again as im pregnant so the problem has started again even tho there are 3 horses in the field (my event gelding and the new gelding and my retired horse)plus 2 ponies in the field next to them. My friend took out my event horse yesterday for half an hour. While my other horse was in his stable with the other horses in the stables next to him and he threw a wobbley again. Neighing histerically, running round stable, kicking door and half rearing at it!What an earth can i do?Do i seperate them again but thats hard work for me to have them at different places!!We have also tried leaving him in the field with new gelding while taking event horse away and he just gallops round neighing!
 
i had this problem, 3 horses isnt always the answer imo. my mare and gelding became too attatched and when i took him away she would go nuts galloping around screaming for him, didnt matter that she had another mare for company, she wanted him and vise versa. In the end i just got on with it, they eventually got used to being seperated but it took a lot of time and repetition. I eventually had to give the gelding up as he had other problems which i didnt have time to deal with ( he was a loan horse) so now she just has the old mare for company, and shes 100% better although still whinnys at the gate when i take the old girl out for a pootle.
 
After moving my riding mare home, I bought a sec a for company for her, I very quickly realised three heads were better than one and bought another section a - this was mainly motiviated by something I read, saying that horses are far more likely to pal up strongly with horses of the same type and size. Who knows wether that is quite true but never the less, as predicted, the two ponies are thick as theives already and my riding mare is quite happy to come out and do things :)
 
Thanks for reply. im going to try leaving him in the field again with the other horse and see how that goes. Its just i worry he'l hurt himself!
 
I wish having an extra horse was the answer but it doest seem to help. He was good friends with the new gelding while my event horse was at the other yard but now hes back he only wants him not the other gelding!
