I have a 9 year old warmblood who is wonderful but since january has become tight in his movement and when asked to go into trot will hop a long in canter. Is not lame, had physio out and found him tight in the sternum. Does not like his girth being tightened and having rugs put on and displays this by biteing his chest. Wondered if he had stomach ulcers and went onto gastroguard but hasn't helped. Have no confidence in vets and wondered if anyone else has come across this?

My horse prefers canter due to his bone spavin, for some reason, he finds canter easier.

It sounds like he has problems in the chest area, I wonder if he could have been kicked in his chest area and its taking a while for the bruising to settle?

He is not turned out with others but thanks. I had an accident in my wagon in October and he was in it, but would have thought that it would have got better by now if it was to do with that and am wondering kissing spine but may be being meladramatic!

If you dont trust your vet then find a new vet and have it thoroughly investigated- ask for a referral if necessary for a scan

The only way you will find out why is to do a step by step investigation with a vet. Otherwise you are purely guessing and you could be making something worse. Its obviously a problem if hes just started to do it (instead of all his life) and he is demonstrating a pain response. You need a vet!

My horse used to do this because he found trot difficult due to hind suspensory issues and collateral ligament problems. Personally I believe your horse is probably trying to tell you something.
Find a vet you trust and get them to investigate.

Thanks everyone for all good advice. On the lunge with saddle on he is fine and riding bareback he is fine. I have decided to get another opinion and may be full body scan - he is not insured and the bills are mounting up. Will keep you posted as to what happens.
