I've got a section D who has got almost half of his mane rubbed out or significantly thinned :( His mane is quite thick and bushy but I think he is prone to rubbing (His well fitting breastplate needs strips on sheepskin to prevent rubbing)

He was in an amigo full neck rug (with the hood detatchable) at first which rubbed. Then we tried a lycra hood underneath incase the mane was getting caught between the hood and the rug but it was just as bad (not sure if it was worse or not). He now has a orican high neck rug which I think looks like it is starting to rub! It's driving me crazy and I want to do a little bit of showing with him but I can't if he resembles a bald toilet brush!

Does anyone have any ideas other than shaving the whole lot off??!!!!

Don't take this the wrong way, but being a section D does he really need rugs with necks?

If you are worried about him keeping his winter coat for too long in the spring, there are some parts of nature you just can't mess with, and I doubt you will be making his coat any thinner by rugging him up, it'll just look thinner because it is flatter to his body.

One thing I have found to make the hair grow back quickly is MegaTek hair rebuilder which I bought over the intranet.

If it's any consolation, this happens to my D every year no matter how hard I try, and it doesn't seem to have ever gone against her in the show ring.

He needs rugging up because he is fully clipped and in full time work. He is out competing a lot of weekends, has regular intensive flatwork lessons and will be starting to hunt soon. If I didn't clip him, he would literally be dripping with sweat (and was just before his first clip in the autumn!) Interesting about the megatek hair regrowth because I've seen that on the internet but was unsure whether it would work- I might just try some when spring starts to show itself!!

I will take his neck part off his amigo rug and keep my fingers crossed for some hair regrowth!!

Thats quite encouraging that other people suffer with the same problems! I only want to do a little bit of showing but we don't want to get laughed out the show ring!!

Sorry, you hadn't mentioned he is clipped out - understand why he's rugged up now. Half my horse's mane fell off last year the week before the weather turned nice, so I haven't used any rugs with necks this year, in fact I've hardly rugged at all and his coat isn't any thicker than the previous years when he's had about twenty rugs on at a time ;-) which is what I was basing my previous answer on.

I used Magatek on his mane and it really did grow back much quicker than I had hoped for, its worth a shot!

My horse is not section d but he is a cob type and fully clipped mid winter he survived in just a standard neck turn out... I was convinced he would shiver away but I had to try it to save his mane. I learned very quickly that I was quilty of excessive rugging when I didn't need to. Might be worth a try.

My coloured native (Dales Type) is fully clipped, and out during the day with a standard style HW rug. She has survived :D
Granted her mane is double, but I have felt no need to put the neck on her rug. (she was inside today - high winds and rain)

I gave up on combo rugs because like the OP, they were removing huge chunks of mane.

OP - Just ditch the neck cover - you will have some mane growth by April. I was in this situation and used those clear hair bobbles, about the size of plaiting bands to pull mane across and underneath the shorter part. It disguised the thinner parts.

Last year half of my Friesians mane was rubbed out. This year I got the neck chopped off his orican and his stable rugs and he had a high chaser clip. All's well and his mane is now a good 8" long. When I first started out rugs were just canvas with no lining and certainly no necks - I remember being quite envious of my friends rug that had a bit of blanket stitched in!

i have same prob with all mine, i was given a tip to spray the mane and underside of neck cover with mane and tail conditioner. never tried it coz mine are clipped so used hoods to protect the mane and also chests from rubbing also its sounded a very expensive way to solve prevent rubbing.
