I have a lovely Chestnut TB mare that I really need to get more weight on. She is never going to be a fat horse but I think she needs more weight.

She is currently feed on 2 big scoops of chaff, 2 scoops of suger beet and 1 scoop of Bailey's No 17 split into 2 feeds a day. All my other horses are on the same feeds ( differnet quantities ) and look great. She is the first one I have that I cannot get weight on.

Any idea's?

Firstly, I'd drop the chaff, it has little nutritional value. Secondly, by 2 scoops of sugar beet, I think you mean already soaked? So, depending on how wet you make it, thats not a huge amount in 'dry weight' terms.
Is no.17 the endurance mix? It's designed to be fed at more than 1 scoop a day for a horse. How big is your mare?

Personaly, I'd feed topspec balancer with alfa beet (or speedi beet and alfa A) and a mug of oil a day

and/ or topspec conditioning cubes.

Otherwise if you want to keep it really simple, then why not just feed the recomended amount of bailys no.4?

My TB has spillers conditioning cubes and dengi hi fi. A scoop of each three times a day and he's never looked better. Doesn't heat him up in the least (unlike Baileys No4!)

Hi,I also have a 16.2 TB ex racehorse who is an incredibly fussy eater and loses weight really quickly....he's fed Baileys No 4,alfa a oil and sugar beet.I think the Baileys is fab and would highly recommend it as a feedstuff that adds weight and condition without sending them loopy!!!

Baileys number 4 again, fab stuff and non heating contrary to what some say. Every horse is different though and some react better to one product rather than another!

NAF Pink Powder is good too in case she's not digesting her food properly.

You don't say how much hay she is getting, whatever it is give her more than she can eat!

Good luck.

I also have a tb and have moved on to winergy equilibrium, having great results with it. It is also a complete feed, no need to buy lots of different bags of feed. I do put in a little bit of speedi beet as she likes her feed a bit moist.
