OK so moved my boy last night, happy as larry, both he and I. BUT I am at my wits end with his sweet itch, he spent last night in and has rubbed away about 3" of his mane. Now I know all of the lotions and potions etc etc BUT what is there that can be put around the stable door please to help prevent this...apart from barbed wire!!!

You can get a steroid cream from the vet which will help in the short term or steroid injections (but do be careful as your chap is a cob, they could trigger laminitis), the only long term solution is a Boett rug - (haven't read all your previous posts, so don't know if you use one or not). If you start him off wearing one now, it will take 3 weeks or so for the present irritation to subside. Next year, start using it in March, before the midge season gets underway. I have an Icelandic - they are extremely prone to sweetitch, he wears his rug in the day and is in at night without it. I do love your horse btw - he is fab.

LOL - Barbed wire won't help, as will just pull out more hair!!!

Imagine you have a nasty itching mosquito bite, and you are somewhere near!

The only solution is for horse not to get bitten - so rug it.

You cannot stop it scratching, so the only solution is to leave it out rugged so it has nothing to rub on, or make surfaces as smooth as possible to lessen the damage.

Definately use rugs. My mare has sweet itch and I use the Rambo hoodie 24/7. Really makes a difference. Also scudo (sp) cream for any sore bits
