Help needed - feeding Bakers = nutter of a dog

I was wondering if you guys could help I have done a quick google and I think its confirming my fears. Bakers = Nutty Dog.
My dog is a King Charles he is 1 and a half years old he is fed Bakers as the breeder said to feed Bakers puppy when I got him so I have just stuck with Bakers.
My dog is a nutter and Im not joking he goes for 4 mile walk with my dad most days and still has bags of energy. He jumps up and bounces about all the time, tries to catch flies and jumps up and keeps jumping up trying to catch them and doesnt give up!!
Is it true that Bakers gives them too much energy?

No it isn't true that Bakers gives too much energy but it does give the canine equivalent of ADHD.

Bakers is full of colours & preservatives and many hyper or inattentive dogs show behavioural improvements when put on other foods.
I kennel for basset welfare and 90% of problem dogs coming in are fed Bakers and 90% of these improve after a diet change. I usually switch to Skinners duck & rice but there are lots of possible alternative feeds.
 
try anything with no added crap, lol, like colorings and additives.

wagg is good and not expensive, do few different kinds and easy to get hold off.
 
As he is a Cavalier he will ,besides the hyper behaviour, get filthy teeth too..Cavs do not have great teeth as a breed. Why not go raw..two or three raw chicken wings and maybe a couple of PLAIN Bonio biscuits would do him fine, teeth clean,calmer dog..simplez!

Wagg causes our two to generate copious amounts of s**t.
I kid you not, we get about twice as many to pick up as when they are on Skinners Maintenance.

* In my defence, they only had it for a short while last winter as the Skinners delivery was stranded due to the snow. *
 
I read the title on the main index as "Help needed - feeding Bakers" and my answer would have been 'Just don't' :p

Not that I ever thought I'd recommend it but Jollyes own brand fish or turkey with rice won't break the bank, is low-protein and is the only thing that my dog stablised on following skin problems.
This utter mulch :p is of course supplemented with raw days, oily fish, eggs, natural yoghurt and a dairy culture.
 
I have a cavi and she gets lots of exercise and he firness levels are supreme for a cav:rolleyes::p:D but she runs with a pack of 9 other mahussive fit dogs, she has endless energy but she is not hyper and settles and sleeps as soon as walk time is over, she also likes to hunt (which I love to see) she is as trim as trim can be and has fab glossy hair and she is and has always been on Fish4puppies:) as she is still a puppy.:D

Wagg and bakers should be illegal;)
 
And on that note, four miles, if the average person takes around 15 minutes to walk a mile, is only one hour out of his whole day for a fizzy young pup. Loads more games, fetch, play, training, making him use his brain should also settle him down.

Exactly, and even though we are led to believe cavi's are couch potatoes, they are not at all, they have the same energy levels as a spaniel when allowed to actually do it, mine is 10 months and she gets no forced exercise but pleanty of free exercise and apart from the pointer (that just runs 10 miles for fun):eek: she cover more ground with her nose down than other dogs inc the lurchers, and being little and full grown at 6 months and a titchy little thing I dont worry about the amount of free play hunting she does even at 10 months. (in the fields) no hard ground pounding.
 
The differance we saw was that not feeding bakers our dog no longer is a nervous wreck (with socialisation of course) doesn't chew nearly as much and we actually see her sleep. She has turned into an amazing dog. We've gone to 100% raw. You will be amazed.
Totally agree with the ADHD statement two friends of my friends who met her previously said she should have a dose of their Ritalin (human ADHD treatment) :eek::eek::eek:
 
Hi Lozhug, dont touch with a bargepole!!!!! I work in a pet and equestrian warehouse and we unfortunately sell loads of the horrible stuff due in most part to their advertising on telly!

As others have pointed out its full of E numbers, colours and general crap! If any customers ask me for advice at work I stear them a mile away from Bakers, there's loads of others much better than that that dont cost the earth like your premiums i.e. Royal Canin, Hills, Eukanuba, Burns, Iams etc. Skinners is defo a good one, we sell loads of all varieties of that.

Good luck with your doggie hun and finding him a good food that suits him xx

When i was taking Emma to puppy classes the guy had done an analysis of the major dog foods and the only one he recommended was Burns. He gave everyone a leaflet explaining what he had discovered except me! Cos i was feeding raw. :D

It is a bit annoying though as i would have liked to have seen the info.
I doubt he looked at Fish4dogs though as I think he just did the major brands including JW.

I must add he had a 4 mile walk this morning with my dad whilst I was at the yard. He got yeat another walk of 3 miles early afternoon, we have played fetch with his fave ted, he loads of toys to play with and a massive garden to run round. Been again this eve for a couple of miles and still has loads of energy to burn off.
Its like he has ADHD he never stops and I mean never stops. He goes mad like something has clicked in his head and will round the garden at a 100 miles an hour jumping over the walk paths like they are jumps, running round and round the hedges and what ever clicked in the first place will go and he just stops.

Defo going to try another feed hopefully with some result in his energy levels.

Good for you bet he didn't comment on the raw!!

Yes Burns - The man's research was lacking a bit I think, Burns who would have us believe that after a few generations dogs can no longer eat much meat and have turned virtually vegetarian. Burns that calls one of its feeds Chicken with Maize a big fat lie when it's a whopping 70% Maize and just 16% chicken meal (which is not even guaranteed to be all meat)!!!

Thanks, I know. :o I think I'm going back to Pets at Home to scope more thoroughly next weekend for a higer protein feed with no artificial rubbish.

I just had a chat with the OH and he reckons, probably quite rightly, that we are too disorganised to do raw! I'd fancy half and half but I'm a bit panicky about the bones etc, even though I know dogs should be eating raw, obviously. Probably best to discuss it when he's not dashing off to night shift :o
