I am going to my first show next week on my 14.2hh tri-coloured cob cross mare. I am going to enter show jumping, a coloured under-saddle class and novelty classes on her. Showing is new to both of us and I need general advice and tips for the show, which is only small.

What should I do once I get into the ring for my coloured class? How long does my individual show piece need to be and what should I include in it? Should I plait her? Does she need to have an annual or LHC and be CHAPS Reg? Other tips on showing a coloured pony would be much appriciated.

Also, would I be able to enter her in working hunter as she is tri-coloured?

Thanks :)

a picture of your pony would help the showing people greatly :) can't offer realy advice i'm afraid as i don't do showing, but have fun :)

in the ring show walk away from the judge, do sitting trot towards them (the judge will move don't worry!) then show a trot and canter on both reins, turn in, salute and pat your pony :) watch a few shows on youtube and practice at home so you know what feels 'smooth' and what flows for you and your pony.

Good luck :D

A figure of 8 in trot and canter is a great, brief way of demonstrating the paces on both reins. I did this is my first working hunter class this weekend where the other participants did 4 x 20mtr circles. We got 1st Place. It was only a small amateur show but it was great fun!

The steward will direct you for the first part. Walk trot canter as a group then pull you in.

Some judges want to see them trot away/towards them but they'll tell you.

Do NOT make your show long. They do not want to see a dressage test! Walk out onto the track, trot a figure of 8 at most, canter on both reins and maybe show a gallop (you'll be told either way usually). Your show should be no more than a minute or so long. The judge does not want to watch 10 competators doing a 5mins test each, they get bored and fed up!

Turnout depends what type youer hors is. If she's not heavy enough to be a traditional with a long flowing mane then she needs to be plaited and trimmed (feathers off etc). Takc should be plain hunter tack, no flashes or grakles and no bling.

Hello, the first thing and most important thing about going to a show is having fun!

Presuming its a local show, no registrations needed, and yes you can do working hunter classes! Go and enjoy!

When I do a show I walk away from the judge, trot back in a nice straight line (no need for sitting trot) turn left, pop into canter, change the rein in trot, pop into canter and ask for some lengthened strides.

One tip I was taught is to plan your show so that when you ask for lengthened strides in canter you're coming back towards the line.

Get there early so you can watch what's happening in the ring you will be in, where are they lined up, and you can plan your show. Helped me to stay calm(ish) and work out if any spooky corners to be ready for!

Let us know how you go, and pics of pony please :D

Another little word to the wise is make sure you arent first to do the individual show. Try and be at least a few down the line when they call you in. Then you can watch some and decide which ones had more impact and copy some of the more experienced show riders, you will easily be able to tell !!!.
Also remember you know your horse is the best in the world but the judge may not agree on the day so dont get downhearted just have some fun.
