HI guys,

I have a 16.2 chestnut gelding thoroughbred called Jasper and he is only just 5. but the problem im having is he used to tie up anywhere and stand beautifully but recently he has been pulling at the tie till it snapped, but tonight it went too far. He reared up as soon as i had tied him up and snapped the super strong lead rope i had because he was breaking others far too quickly, so i calmed him down and put the pressure halter on him that i have to lead him in and he reared up again and bucked and very nearly fell to the floor...

i now dont know wot to do its getting worse and worse each day and its now got to the point where i cant even put his rope through the tie ring before he starts rearing up...

any suggestions would be greatly appreiciated as i love my boy to peices but he is starting to become too much of a handful

thanks xxxxx

It sounds like he has scared himself at some point and tying him upto something stronger is not going to help- if anything you are likely to cos more problems. You should only really tie upto something that can be easily broken (baler twine etc). My old horse started to have a problem after being badly bitten by the horse in the next stable. I ended up having to tie him in his stable for a bit and to begin with, I only put the rope through the twine - didn't actually tie him until he stopped running backwards as soon as he felt any pressure on the headcollar. Once he was happy to stand there with the rope looped through, then I started to tie and he was OK. However, I had to always be mindful that if he was ever spooked, his immediate reaction would be to pull back.

thread a lunge line thru the tie ring and hold it, if he pulls bak abit just release slightly so the pressures not on him. keep doin this till he settles down then see if he will tie again in his stable. just carry this on.

i would just put rope through and dont tie it, and reward for every second he stands still with juicy carrots and your voice - take his mind off it, feed him there and quietly and persistantly keep putting rope through. Stand and hold him, play games - it wont be quick or easy, but it is sortable, let us know how you get on...
