I saw a lovely piebald mare advertised a while ago on horsemart with cavalier two for joy breeding, she was then 5k which I thought was an awful lot for a not yet 4 yr old. I rang anyway as horse was local.
I since decided to keep my nice KWPN mare and run her instead but got a phone call a couple of days ago from the people with the piebald to say they were desperate to sell and I could have her a lot cheaper, so went to go see her.
On arriving it all seemed a bit fishy, she said she had no tack (no worries I brought my own and lunge lines ect so I could try horse). Looked her over, trotted her up and then tacked up and gave her a quick lunge in her very tiny muddy paddock (lady had no facilities) and then lay on her, and sat on her and walked round yard. She seemed tense and a bit confused but didn't do anything wrong. Left it at that and then did some digging that afternoon and found out that mare had been a real problem. Owner had basically been stitched up with it by a well known "instructor" who had "advised" that a relative novice purchase a 3 yr old with no school or facilities to bring the horse on. Horse had been panicked, bolted, jumped a fence and hurt owner. She was described as nappy and dealer would not take horse back.
I have the time and facilities to sort this mare out, restart her and hopefully turn her round, but have told owner I'm only prepared to give her £800 for the horse as quite frankly she sounds dangerous and I'm not willing to risk my neck or my finances. She won't be a quick project and what's happened to her may never be undone. I have offered the owner she come over to mine on a schooling / breaking livery if she would rather invest more money herself in to the mare as quite frankly feel sorry for the pair of them, mare isn't all bad but very confused and owner has been taken for a real ride. But what would you give for a horse thats been described as "dangerous". She's saying she's going to re advertise for closer to 2k but I'm worried she'll go to someone who also hasn't got the experience to sort her and then will be really screwed up. What would someone else who could sort a horse out like this be prepared to pay for a pott. risky project? She's to make about 16.1hh well marked, nicely put together, moves averagely but this may come with more work.
