Ok, so i have this bloody show on sunday and i'm assuming the judges will want to see a square halt. I have been practising halts for the past few days, however i'll only manage a square one on the odd occasion. I'm not sure if i'm doing anything specifically on this occasion to make the halt square or whether it is just luck

Is there anything i can do to try and ensure the halt is square? If anyone has any advice/tips that i can try and practice tomorrow i'd be really grateful, thanks.

You need to start with a good walk, otherwise they will be trailing their feet, they need to be tracking up to start with, then half halts, keep your leg on into the halt, using your seat and legs together, and keep a contact once halted, don't drop it, otherwise they might step off again. Keep your own body square, and ensure the horse is dead on straightness wise down the line as well.

Im having the same problem and find that backing up a step from halt places his feet more or less square. Hope this helps and best of luck on Sunday!

agree with this! Also, I would not really advise asking for a step backwards, as it's not a very helpful habit if you ever intend to ride in dressage tests - taking a step back in the halt would cause you to lose marks. Some horses learn to step back very quickly and then it's difficult to stop them doing it.

As long as the back feet arnt underneath the horse and the front feet are square that should be fine, tell me about it how difficult it is to get them to do it! Mine does it everytime when practising then when in show have to fanny about with him especially when we strip him he stands like a stroppy teenager!
