You really need to determine why he is underweight otherwise you can feed him and feed him and won't get anywhere. Could he have a heavy worm burden? Have his teeth been checked in the last six months?
I agree with the others, firstly you need to rule out any pain issues and question his food and fibre intake, along with amount of exercise he is given.
Can you give us more details so that we are better informed to advise you?
Hi DB - as others have said, not putting on weight can be due to the wrong nutrition or an unknown illness or a horse stressed out for a thousand reasons eg not enough turnout, afraid of what he's being asked to do, pain, missing a friend etc etc. There's many expert nutritionists on the Forum but you could pump calories into your horse til the cows come home and if he's not putting on weight for a different reason, it won't make the slightest difference. If you could let us know how long you've had him, is this a new problem, how old is he, what is his management/feeding routine, does he have any health problems, what are you feeding him at the moment etc etc. Hopefully, we can all try to help then xxx
I have had him a few months he has been wormed his teeth have been checked and he is 15yrs at the moment I am feeding him on spilliars senior and baileys no 4 he is not working at all he is fed 3 times a day with as much hay as he will eat and turned out about 6hrs a day but the grass is not great the vet can find nothing wrong with him he has stopped losing weight but is not putting anything on I am worried sick about him I bought him like this knowing it would be hard but I am at my wits end and will now try anything
Where in the country are you? What is his daily routine? Where did he come from and what is his history? Is he used to being stabled? Are you giving oil? How much exercise is he getting?
You need to be more specific if you want our help? (said in a nice way)
He came from the auctions he is stabled at night and turned out during the day I am near Manchester and no he is not getting oil and not much exercise no riding at all I don,t know any history on him he seems very placid and laid back and very calm
