My lovely little mare still felt 'flat' on racehorse mix and when i spoke with my nutritionist they felt she could have a startch overload, like us eating too much chocolate we just feel bleurgh! Anyone heard of this? so on advice put her on a high oil high fibre mix and this has certainly woke her up, we had a rodeo audition for 2 nights when being ridden!
Problem now is i know it works but she is'nt keen on eating it nor the quantity for her workload (3.5kg)
I have tried giving her alfa a oil before which she wont eat, adding oil to her diet, doesnt eat, i can 'hide' outshine in her feed but only about 1/2lb. I am at the end of the tether, nothing wrong medically, teeth, jabs and worming up to date, & will happily eat haylage all day.
She doesnt like most feed brands that are suited to her for adding condition i.e baileys, d&h, but does like saracen enduro 100 which we cant get!
High oil high fibre diet is better for her, but know she would eat old ration.
Any ideas much appreciated for adding condition on a finicky horse that is in hard work? sorry so long, skittles for all

Have a look at ERT cubes, (D&H or Spillers, can't remember which makes them). They are designed for horse with ERT but are very high in oils. Made mine much more forward when I used it but it isn't cheap unfortunately.

Another option is calm and condition from allen and paige I also use fast fibre . I cant feed my mare high protien or starch feeds and shes really settled on this.Shes added weight and is working really well.

Thanks kerrilli, yes she has tried those and kicked them over even if i took away her haylage and left them with her. She will eat sugarbeet which is good but cant live on it for calories! She also wont eat ERT & is currently on a diet of baileys endurance mix to see if it will condition her (thats what they suggested) She reacts the opposite way to starch i.e. sluggish not hyper!!

Thanks cellie i will look it up. I am toying with the idea of a balancer but where would i get the calories she needs from to work and maintain condition?

my yo's Tb gets apple chaff, topspec balancer, fibre beet, and some fairly basic nuts plus add lib haylage. he seems to go pretty well on this and looks fab i guess a lot of the time its trial and error :S x

Thanks for the advice she would be nearly of full fitness not quite at the peak which will be december hunting but she is a very athletic little horse that will never really carry much weight as far as i can see. I wonder if i should blood test her before i give her b vitamins or will they not do her much harm?

Ive managed to add 40 kilos on my mare with 1 scoop c and c and 1 scoop fast fibre plus large scoop of chaff twice a day. There are plenty of calories for maintenance and adding condition. On my photobucket there are before and after pics if you would like to check out difference this feed made.My mare is very highly strung and worries weight off so I needed a feed that didnt make her to hypher but still gives her plenty of energy. I think its the best shes ever looked .During the winter I add 365 equine balancer supplement which I order online I can find the link if your interested.I find i dont have to mess her feed around and feel she is getting all right vits during harsh winter months.
