Just after some general advice.

Old pony, 23, had hepatatis last year, 75% liver failure, managed to control with steroids and now about 40%. At worst he lost appetite was very thin, no muscle, damage to nervous system (wobbly on legs). Seems to have recovered a bit from this. He also has mild cushings (only symptom keeping aprt of winter coat in summer), arthritis in back legs, COPD and herniated knee joint (not lame just swollen 24/7 but doesnt cause problem).

I have just moved him to a new yard, not much grass and in overnight. He was previously out 24/7. Had to move as he was on his own as lost his field mate and needs company.

Only been there for a few days, since Sunday afternoon. He is grazing ok looks around and then grazes, new field mate who he will pair up with eventually but at the moment just ignores. I think he will graze better once he makes friends more with his field mate, Last night he ate 1/2 of hay (on full fat horsehage 2 sections). Sunday night he barely touched his hay.

Before he moved he was eating half scoop Hi-Fi Senior, half scoop 16+ mix, handful barley rings and quarter scoop sugar beet once a day. Now he has moved am offering this but in 2 feeds morning and evening but he is only eating maybe a few mouthfuls each time.

He is very tucked up and looks like he has weight loss already, calm in stable, cant wait to get out in the field in the morning.

Any ideas on how can put any weight on, will always be difficult due to his liver condition.

I think he has lost his appetite due to moving and not used to being in overnight (has been field kept for about 6 years, previously in at night before) and just need time to get used to it, but always grateful for any advice and similar stories.

Many Thanks in advance :D

It sounds as it the stress of moving may have really knocked him.

Given his age and history I would be treating this as a bit of an emergency situation tbh (without wishing to alarm you).

If you are feeding 4 feeds then you need to space them out throughout the day - and I would really up the sugar beat to make it sloppy and appetising.

How are his teeth - and is the haylage the same as he had at the previous yard?

If there's no improvement by Thursday I would have your vet up to assess him.

It's very early days, just keep on going as you are and see what happens, he's already eaten more hay last night than he did the first night which suggests that he will get back to normal for him. I'd give him until the weekend before panicking.

Also, referring to amymay's post, are you soaking the barley rings? I find that horses eat them more easily when soaked.

Funny enough he seems to eat the barley rings (dried) out of his dinner and his carrots, just not really eating the sugar beet and some of his mix and hi-fi.

I think I may try each part of meal separately to see what he will eat and go from there. Just have to have carrots in each part as likes his carrots, always gets those from his dinner. Keep offering the hay too.
