Can anyone give me any ideas for how to help the stupid creature.

On Friday night it came in hopping lame. Got the emergency vet out. Said she had a pulse and heat in the hoof.

Dug around a bit as she thought it was an abcess but nothing came out. She did find some gravel under the shoe. Was instructed to poultice to soften her very hard feet and hopefully it would burst on its own.

This is the creature that is totally anti vet so I was very impressed we got this far. Have been poulticing all weekend. This morning I went down and found her stable in a mess and the rug rack next to it had fallen over. Didn't think much of this at the time but she had got the vetwrap and tape off her foot. Luckily the poultice was still stuck in there.

Put a new one on only using vetwrap as she seemed a bit strange over the tape and it stayed on all day.

Went tonight and put another on, complete with tape. As soon as her foot touched the floor she went completely nuts, charging round the barn and managed to get it off. So I started again with just vetwrap this time, same again, totally freaked and pulled it off.

Rang the vet and told them I couldn't get it to stay on and that she was going to seriously hurt herself or someone else. They said to leave it off as no abscess had shown itself. I am slightly worried as there was slight seepage from where the vet had cleaned some gravel out around the white line. Still a little heat in the foot but no noticable pulse.

So have covered her foot in purple spray and left her.

I'm frightened to try poulticing again in case she really injures herself and I would never dare leave her overnight.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to stick a poultice on without bandage or tape. Hoof boots wouldn't work, I'm sure she would object to those even more.

I was going to ask the farrier (he works with the vet) to see if he could dig a bit deeper, but if I did I would now have no way to dress it.

Help please, any ideas welcome. This is not my horse, my daughter lost interest and I got left with it. She intimidates me on a good day and I am quite proud that I have got this far, every time I build up a bit of confidence with her she does something like this. Truth is I cant cope with her, I know someone else probably could, but am frightened she will end up in a bad home or being passed around dodgy dealers for the rest of her life.

Could you not 'tub' the foot in a bucket? The horse may be more comfortable with this. Just make sure it's shallow enough to not come over the coronet band. After that reaction I would probably give the horse bute first.

Tubbing a Hoof:
If your horse as an infection in its hoof, you will need to tub the infected hoof. What you do is fill a clean bucket with warm water and put around three tablespoons of Epsom salts into the water. Then, have someone who knows your horse hold it while you place the infect hoof into the bucket. Your horse will have to stand there for up to ten or fifteen minutes twice per day until all the pus and other things in its hoof come out.

what were you putting on the abscess? animalintex and then a vet wrap?

just an idea, but what about the latex poultice covers like this:

Yes animalintex, vetwrap and then tape. That looks fantastic but I think we would have the same problem, she seems to object to "wearing" anything on her hoof, or perhaps its the feel of it under her foot. The way she reacts you would think it is hurting her, I just cant see how it would be.

Thats a really good idea, I dont know if she would allow it, but certainly worth a try. Is it OK to leave them without a dressing in between. I'm just worried that she will get dirt into whatever it is without any covering.

Use a rubber skip for the tubbing it's safer if they freak because they bend unlike a plastic bucket.

Anone with any ideas on keeping a dressing on without creating a boot which seems to be what she objects to.

I wondered about glue but if it was strong enough to keep it on, how would you get it off. Anything else would come off in the wet.

She didn't seem to care about the poultice which stayed stuck inside her foot, just the vetwrap and the tape.

I really am stumped, if I just put more bandage and tape to make it stay on she will just panic even more.

Get some silage tape cut in pieces long enough to stick to the only to the hoof you will need to get the hoof as dry as possible to get it to stick make the animalintex as dry possible it will need to be a little wet or it won't work.
You will need to get some to hand you the strips. Then use them to hold the dressing not letting it touch above the coronet it won't last as Long but would better than nothing.
