I've just bought a cracking Wintec with a black gullet. Kelly's owner used a Wintec black on her before she took her off the road, so I thought I'd be best sticking with the same type and size saddle.

Trouble is she's a bit porky round the shoulders, and the saddle seems to sit quite high on her withers (certainly more than three finger width). I don't know much about this type of saddle, so could anyone who does tell me if it squashes down in use, and the black gullet is OK, or do I need a wider one till she loses some flab? And should I go for the red (wide) or the blue (medium wide)?

I'm on very a tight budget at the moment, so the most cost effective solution possible please!

neither of my wintecs have really squashed down

My saddler said either buy the measuring device they sell or i could place the gullet plate directly onto the horse and that it should fit snuggly against the horse? im not sure how reliable this is

i would try to find the gulet gauge second hand or find a friend who has one tht you can borrow ?

Cair uses air bags which do not bed down. I have found wintecs all sit high on my horse.

See if you can use the gullet measure, if not go up a size. When she has lost the weight you can go down a size. I have to do this with my horse.

The only wintec which fits him is the wide version!

CAIR is foam, not air. Common misconception.

You really need a saddler out to fit your saddle. Most only charge about £40 around here.

If you really can't, take the bar out of the saddle and place it where it should be on the horse and it should lay flat against the skin.

However in my experience these saddles are made in factories and often have pockets where they are not filled evenly, that and your horse may not be even, and you would need a saddler out to adjust the padding. I have had to have this done myself.

Cheaper than having a physio out.

cair is foam and air - theres a panel of foam down the centre of the panel and air surrounding it

my lovely saddler showed me the inside structure of one before i bought it for a horse with a bad back

and sounds like you need the wider plate

I've got a Wintec with Cair - the panels are filled with air and foam but the foam is very low density so it just supports the air. The idea behind Cair is that the air will move around to ensure the saddle sits evenly. I love mine, it's great, since havingi t my horse has built up across theback heaps and moves much better. I've just bought one of the wintec girths with cair now as well.

Cair is definitely air, otherwise it would be called "Coam" instead if it was just foam...

OP, I would buy the measuring thingy that Wintec sell. I find their sizes are really odd and nothing like any other saddle I've had, so you need to use their measuring thing. The Cair panels won't bed down like normal flocking. Echo the person who said you need to have your saddler check it - I have one and saddler checked it when she came out to fit me with/sell me a new dressage saddle.

Yep, everyone's right - Cairs is foam AND air. Bags are filled with a soft foam, then sealed at atmospheric pressure. They're a bit like a plastic zip-lock food bag sealed with a sponge inside it. And they can and do compress and deform over time.

Sounds like your saddle is too narrow so worth getting a GOOD saddle fitter out to check it. However, just because the width is adjustable doesn't mean they fit everything. They are a terrible fit on many many horses, despite saddlers 'proffesional' fitting'
