was wondering if anyone could give me some advice regarding my very indestructatble horse!! shortened version of what happened yeaterday is a land rover/range rover (am not good with cars!!) went right through my stable with my horse still in it is a miricle both she and the driver walked away from it as it was one hell of a mess when i got there!! now the old girl is a bit beaten up as expected but is still alive thankfully however she has cuts to her eyelid that need bathing and thats part of my problem!! she is headshy and whilst she is letting me put drops in the other eye that has scratches to her lense she does not want me near the other eye that needs cleaning :-( i have tried with the headcollar on but she is fighting me and as she has lots of cuts on her head i dont want to be to harsh to her. she is not happy at being tied up for me to do it and does struggle a lot again i dont want to hurt her any more than she is already hurting so if anyone has any tips on how to clean a cut on a headshy horse that would be great and also any tips on making her walk about as she has cuts to all 4 legs that are a bit swollen and warm again she is very reluctant to move as she was bashed quite a bit. she has been given bute, antibiotics, antibiotic cream and a tetunus so they will help with the pain and any possible infection that could arrise but the vet wants all cuts cleaning with salt water as well!!!

poor thing, bless her, what a lucky escape!
what's she like with a twitch on? i've found that mares respond very well to one, i do it very tight and get everything done quickly, they definitely work well on some horses. has to be better than risking her throwing her head just as you try to clean her eyelid, and getting poked in the eye.
it might sound harsh to twitch her, but if you can have it on for, say, 2 mins, and get everything done quickly and effectively, and then take it off and give her tons of fuss and treats, i think that's less traumatic than fighting to get it all done.
very best of luck, hope she's a good girl.

Phew, glad everybody was ok.

Maybe you should rename her lucky lady!

My horse is similar and I put in his eye drops and bathe his eyes when giving him a scoop of chaff. He is food motivated and is 16.3.

I would suggest a twitch as well.
Don't make a big deal out of it, so as not to stress her anymore. Put the twitch straight on, be nice and quiet and talk to her. Once on, do the job as quickly as possible and gently remove the twitch. Then give her a treat to take her mind off what just happened.

She had a lucky escape, glad she is ok

thanks for the replies i cant use a twitch on her as it turns her into a raving lunatic even under sedation!!,and she know the food tricks all to well!! up to now i have managed to keep it cleaned up she does fight me though so i dont push her to far, she is on antibiotics anyway, i think she has been through enough . i have put some pics on the post i put in the new lounge. i was thinking of changing her name to Cat since she seems to have 9 lives!!!:-)

you thought about acp (think thats right :s) or something similar (if there is) that would help her just chill out a bit? not sure if it would be effective on her, but might be worth a try?
shame the twitch doesn't work! darn headshyness!!!

but I am very happy for you that she is still ok etc!!! lucky break!
