can anyone recomend a bit for my welsh D,used to ride him in a snaffle french link but as he has got fitter and stronger he has a really high head carriage and is pulling at jumps, Iv got him in a bubble bit to try and encourage a lower head but he is just evading it and is getting really strong.. . . . I though id ask on here as my arm muscles wont take it anymore!

Perhaps try a waterford as some horses find it hard to lean on them - though doesn't suit all. Also martingale if his head carriage is getting too high.

Thank you, Iv tried the waterford as a snaffle and still found him a little strong, he wears a running martingale but flicks his head on landing if it catches him after the jump, Do they do hanginf cheek snaffle as a waterford? that could work ?

Hi yes you can get waterford's in various types including gags but would take a wee bit of looking to find tho would think you could find one on the internet somewhere. Another thought might be a copper roller or a cherry roller or something along those lines - again they encourage the horse not to lean on the bit.

Hi there, I had a similar pulling problem with my welsh d, he used to go like a train and contstantly lean on my hands and my shoulders would be killing me after a while, I put him into a rubber pelham with curb and used 2 reins, this also gave the advantage of being able to show him in this, although not dressage legal... he went well in this and learned to soften and work on the bit...... and was a little more controllable at jumping although grid work slowed him down and made him think....

good luck

Hi, my mare was ridden in a waterford when I bought her so I tried this but she too was heavy so I changed to a loose ring french link and her flatwork was OK in this but to jump her, she would take charge on approach to a fence then would take off after too. I changed this to a NS universal, and this gave me control on the way to a fence but on landing, she would pull me down and be on her forehand for a couple of strides. So my trainer suggested trying a rubber pelham about a month ago, what a difference. She is now between my hand and leg all the way round a course. A huge difference, and her flatwork is perfect. I know its not dressage legal but its fab for her jumping.
