Hi

I'm moving my lil mare back to Portsmouth next weekend, but am running out of options to transport her back down, I cant afford a great deal, so using a normal transporting company is a no go..

I would be more than happy to pay for fuel/time etc if anyone could kindly lend a hand, she cant stay where she is after next weekend...oh so stressful moving isnt it?

I'd love to help but I honestly can't see us being able to get the trailer out from where we keep it round the back as the mud is deep and the slope slippy, as all our snow has only just melted and more rain is forecast.

If you're able to be really flexible time-wise might it be worth being a little cheeky and contacting transport cos based around where you're going to and asking if they can take a back load more cheaply than the usual rate?

Anyone 'helping you out' could be liable to prosecution, be careful. Only qualified transporters are legally able to transport horses owned by other people now, stupid rule IMO but non the less it exists.
Backloading is where a transporter has dropped off and is heading home anyway, they can be a bit more affordable but means you can't pick and choose the timing. Probably your best choice, otherwise you'll have to bite the bullet and find a decent transports price.
Incidently, transporters DO have to make a living, but fuel prices are high anyway, and running costs on a vehicle are enormous. I have been very annoyed in the past when people offered purely the fuel money without consideration of the hours I've spent driving, or eating whilst out. And all trips we make in the lorry also have tax, insurance, breakdown costs along with servicing and maintenance costs.
It may cost me £80 in fuel, but there are a lot more hidden costs involved!
Having said all this best of luck finding transport, if you have access to a 4 wheel drive there are places that hire trailers out if that is an option?

many of the larger transporters will share a load so that it costs you alot less money. A friend did this from Kent to Gloucestershire and only paid £150 in total.
