I bought my mare, trakehner x as lightly backed about 3 months ago. She is absolutely stunning, very affectionate and a dream to handle on the ground.
I have taken her to in hand shows and wins everything! plus she never puts a foot wrong.
I lunged and long lined her and spent a great deal of time faffing around with her in the arena, leaning over her, banging stirrups etc.
I got on her for the first time, she was as good as gold, only walk and stop but she was foot perfect, the same the second, the third time she bolted from nowhere and i came off! not a great start i agree
The next few times she was foot perfect until one day she set off again!!
After this, and the fact i have another horse to ride i thought it was probably best if she went somewhere with proper facitilies and experienced people to deal with her. The woman she has gone to has worked her consistently and there is an improvement in her but she still bolts, she sits quite and can eventually stop her but other than that no progress!!
I have invested a lot of money in this mare and would really like to keep her to event! Has anyone had a similar problem?!

My mare did this when she was 5 and changed shape very rapidly. It was because her saddle didn't fit properly any more. (I'd only had it 4 months!) I think it was worst when she was season but she went through a phase where it was more or less constant. She would bolt and buck like mad! The annoying thing is that she learned a new "fun" sort of behaviour she might not otherwise have found out about and it was a while until we ironed that one out. But my horse is now nearly always lovely (aged 7) - albeit lively - and hasn't done it at all for a year or so. Good luck!

When she bolted the first time with you did you have some-one experienced on the ground helping you?

Young horses are often scared when they lose their rider and unfortunately it can take them a long time to get over this. We never back our youngsters alone and keep them on the lunge line with an experienced handler when they are first ridden - usually for a week or so.

I would also be tempted to get her saddle and back checked as pain could cause her to bolt. Also I would make sure the girth is not pinching her.

Once a habit becomes established it is very difficult to break.

I would also like to know from the people who originally backed her whether she had started bolting.

was your mare already broken? she told me when i bought her she had been sat on once! whether this was the actual case or whether it had played up with her im not sure!

Yes had someone with me, but couldnt keep a hold of her, she is better now, bolts but you can eventually slow her down, i can appreciate she is/was scared.
She has been away now for coming up 8 weeks, with not that much improvement.
I appreciate she is a mare and her breeding will make her sharp but i dont want to lose my confidence nor ruin her!
