My OH is thinking about creating his own range of animal shampoos (mainly motivated by me complaining about the price of them). So please could you spare a minute to help him with some initial market research?

What products are not available at the moment that you'd like to use e.g. dry shampoo, sensitive skin stuff, show makeup?

Do you buy specialist horse shampoo at the moment? Reasons why/why not.

Would you be interested in any of the following products:
- 70% organic products – like shampoo, wash, mane/tail detanglers, coat shine etc,
- Mild for sensitive skin
- Organic extracts and essential oils

Thanks for your help guys

Unless you were 100% certified organic (ie your bases were organic also) and you used full extracts and not just essences then I wouldnt be interested.

Sadly to produce this type of product costs a fortune.

I do like proper essential oils / extracts in shampoo's etc. But I like a decent amount of oils etc. in it and not just a token gesture! Id like ones made for speific problems - Sweet Itch shampoo for example (with oils which calm itchy skin) and mane/tail detanglers with fly repellent in etc. I know you do get this sort of thing already though but they're never right IMO. Like I know a shampoo recommended for sweet itch but its got citronella in it which makes my horse more itchy!

Dont really mind about whether organic or not TBH (as there's no proof its any better to be organic!!).

I have thought about making my own products as well! Right now Im finding Tesco's own Tea Tree shampoo and Head & Shoulders excellent for the neds!

It was finding a mild shampoo for itchy/sensitive skin that set us thinking about doing this in the first place. Mine gets really sore legs in winter, almost like eczema, and I'm sure hibiscrub and the other medicated shampoos do her more harm than good.

Thanks for your help.

I would be interested in sensitive skin shampoos that are easy to rinse and hypoallergenic. I currently use camrosas shampoo - it is v exspensive but you only use 5 - 10ml in a bucket of water. One tiny botle is now on its second year. I work on the basis that if a shampoo doesnt flare up the eczema on my hand sit will be ok for the neds.

I would like a dry shampoo that you didn't have to use water with? I have a piebald who's mainly white and without a doubt he'll have a stable stain the morning before a show!. He also has pink skin which is sensitive to some kinds of grooming liquids. I would love to buy show makeup, but the current make is too expensive!

The shampoo I have just now is 'Hydrophane Bloom White horse shampoo'. Works very well for white tails. Have seen Oster and Cowboy magic makes but too expensive.

I use asda's own shampoo at the mo. Its cheap and does the job.
I no longer use horse shampoo as its so expensive and no different from normal shampoo.

TBH I would probably carry on using supermarkets own brand due to the fact that its cheaper and does the same job. But my horse doesnt suffer from skin problems so this isnt an issue for me.

I do use Mane and Tail conditioner.

I use baby shampoo, if it is mild enough for babies and dermatologically tested for humans then it's going to be ok for my horse. It is cheap and she doesn't have any allergies/skin conditions, it leaves her coat soft and shiny so is good enough for me. I wouldn't really want to pay more for something that was organic (especially not 70% would have to be all or nothing). If I want anything medicated then I use watered down hibiscrub. I guess somthing with tea tree or citronella would be nice as a fly repellent, but would probably make my own.

Blimey I sound like such a cheap-skate!!

Just my opinion, but I am not convinced this would be a good money generator

You are up against Barrier products, equimins, red rum and countless others

Shampoos are a a high volume low margin product, so not a great start up idea in such a competitive environment.

Nope, to be honest! I just use supermarket cheapy tea tree shampoo. My horse has a white tail and expensive £16 a bottle horse shampoos don't get it clean, even washing it 3 times. Sainsburys 59p a litre tea tree gets it clean in one wash! I wouldn't bother ever buying brand names again if I'm honest.

Oh, and I use Avon quick touch leave in conditioner on his tail. Never use those spray in ones or horsey conditioners as I only brush his tail when he goes to a party, and I wash it then as well.

Hmm, I think Natural Equine already do this! I use their Whitewash for Greys and it is fab (at a show on Sunday 2 people asked how I got his tail so white!)
You can get it on
http://www.natural-equine.co.uk/whitewash.htm
and here is the result! And NO, I don't work for them or own the company!

And that was after several circuits in the mud!

Thanks for the link. From looking at it, they use essential oils, but make no mention of any organic ingredients (or what chemicals they use at all). Interesting though as it's the sort of thing we're thinking about.

I use supermarket own brand of tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner and once a year wash Domi with Dermolene shampoo (to get rid of nasties). Im afraid economy has to influence my decisions. And if its safe for us to use Im sure its safe for horses.
