Hello, I am a final year student at the Royal Veterinary College. I am doing my elective project on peoples attitudes towards equine amputations and prosthetics. I require people to answer a quick survey, after which you will be emailed a short information pack and asked to complete a second short survey. It wont take long and I would be extremely greatful as this project simply won't work without your help!

Thank you very much

I don't know whether me answering the quiz would be represenative because I'm a vet but I'd be very interested to know what your survery concludes. I have quite strong views about amputation in horses, it would be interesting to know what the public perception is.

Hi, yeah the survey is being aimed and at owners and breeders. Im not sure how i feel about it yet, but i find it very interesting that it hasnt taken off here but is much more accepted in the states. Well fingers crossed im going to try and get it published!

Hi,
All done. Good Luck with your study. I would be interested in the results as I studied Equine Science at Uni.

Done! Just to add, that amputation would be something I would consider with my horses. If I was given the chance 2.5yrs ago I would have taken it and given Nettie a chance at living. Unfortunatley it just wasnt viable to save him, but I do believe he would have been a good candidate as he was strong and had put up with a lot in his past. I do know though that this isnt something that you can do with every horse, they have to want to survive to be able to cope with something like that.

Hi, afraid the link isn't working for me!

Hi, yeah the survey is being aimed and at owners and breeders. Im not sure how i feel about it yet, but i find it very interesting that it hasnt taken off here but is much more accepted in the states. Well fingers crossed im going to try and get it published!

There is an old paper on it somewhere (I can't remember where, I stumbled across it whilst searching for stuff on canine osteosarcs) which follows up the fate of a group of about 15 amputee equines in America. Good luck with getting it published, it's certainly quite topical so fingers crossed.

This is completely right! Some horses just wouldn't be right, and the surgeons wont go ahead with the surgery. Everyone knows what their own horse is like. There are many that wouldnt put up with it and others that would take it all on the chin and happily keep plodding on till it was all done!
The next part of the survey is to offer people some basic facts and explanation on the procedure and see if this changes their views. Case selection is one of those key things to understand!

Survey done.

Myself and daughter very interested in the outcome. Daughter 2nd year vet student at UCD. Will get her to do survey too when she arrives this evening.

Good luck

Thanks everyone getting a great response! I will be sending you an email with some information about the procedure and then asking you to do naother quick survey.
Got a nice mixed response so far. Remeber I am not for or against, so say what ever you like, I want to know what you really think!

Thanks so much

Survey done.
Interesting topic.
Im in the 'wont go there camp' I have nursed a horse through a broken leg, and I have seen the agony it can cause. I would not put another through broken leg recovery and I certainly won't have a limb amputated.

Hi guys, had a great response so far so thanks very much everyone that's done it! survey will be open till the end of the week. Would really really appreciate as many responses as we can manage!
It really does only take a few minutes and I will be the only person able to see your responses. The follow up will be brief too.
The lovely horse and hound will obviously get a thank you in my paper too :)

Done!

I am in two minds about this as I don't think I know enough about it. How much pain would the horse be in? How long does recovery take and what does it involve, e.g. box rest? How likely are complications like infections? If all goes well, does the horse then live a normal life span? How mobile is the horse?

If the answers to these questions were either positive for the horse's welfare, or the odds were good, I would try it. The very idea of a prosthetic on an animal does not bother me as such.

It is great to see so many of you interested in the procedure and taking such a sensible approach. When you have completed the survey, some time next week you will recieve an information sheet, which will hopefully help answer some of your questions, you will then be asked to do another quick survey. Im really interested to see if better education would improve support for the procedure... hopefully I will find out soon!
