Zoom was kicked in the field two weeks ago. She was not lame but had quite a deep cut on the side of her hock. I called her old owner who is a vet and she said it was not stitchable but gave me a course of antibiotics and bute.

She lives out 24/7 and we don't have stables but I took her up to the farmer's stables down the road where she lived for 10 days so I could keep it clean. The wound healed ok but she kept knocking the top off it due to where it was. The inside has healed but it is still a circular surface wound. I have been lunging her but she was still bored out of her brain.

I turned her out on Tuesday night and she was happy to be back in the field.

Now.............she keeps rolling in the mud and it gets covered in crap. What do I do???!!!

My options are:

1) take her back to the stables and keep her in 24/7
2) cover it with a bandage
3) persevere with cleaning it every day and hope that it heals eventually

Keeping her in would be a bit of a nightmare since I'm not really meant to use the stables so it would be a big favour and Zoom would hate it. Plus, she still knocks the cut when she gets up and down so it would take a long time to heal.

My boyfriend suggested an open weave bandage so it's clean but the air gets to it but I'm not sure if this is workable?

Has anyone got any miracle cures for keeping wounds clean??!!

Sorry it's so long. Advice appreciated!!!

I would perhaps put some Manuka honey on to help heal the top layer and then cover it for another day or two and let her stay out.If there is no improvement then perhaps try the same again but keep it uncovered to allow it to scab over and keep her in. I presume that there is no infection left in there and no heat or swelling pointing to left over infection. If there is then maybe she needs a few more days worth of antibiotics.

I hadn't thought of Manuka honey. Can I get that from health food shops? It's definately not infected, it's just a really awkward spot.
