My darling neddie tosses her head and when she is cantering in the field. She keep tossing her head from side to side and looking behind her. She does this al lyear round and in all weathers. She also 'windmills' her head at the other neddies both in the field and in the stable. It has both me and asbo stumped ,could anyone shed any light on the behavior of my horse.

thanks for any replies

.

she is also more aggressive to the other 2, will bite & kick them & chase them away, she will ever walk up to the other side of the field to chase them

if you think of the behavior dominate mares make , sort of like circling your arms, thats what she does along with looking at her flanks as she walks/trots/canters in the fields

Is she young? Sometimes head swinging in canter helps with balance until they establish themselves. Or, at the other extreme, could it be light sensitivity? Have you had her eyes checked?

will keep replying for altia lol
she is 7/8 years old, does it when not ridden & in all paces.
don't think shes had her eyes tested

thanks for replying for me computer is getting chucked into the middle of the forth it keep having a fit everytime i want to do anthing.

Don't think my comp would survive uploading a video even if I knew how to. Lady hasn't had her eyes checked and she doesnt have the best balance anyway. The brain to hoof connection is not good either. She hasn't had much schooling generally because where i have and do keep her hasn't had a school.

asbo your right my memroy is bad

My pone does that when they have a good charge around. She's dominant mare too. My friends welsh sec A does it too. Thought it was a naughty welshy thing! (hol's done it for 20 years n she's ok!)

What breed is she? This sounds like the sort of head-tossing/head-wringing that a lot of Arab horses do, but sometimes other breeds as well. If so, it is completely harmless, and not in any way related to 'headshaking'.

If medical causes have been excluded it could just be behavioural, Sophie used to do it quite a bit in the field (never under saddle) because she was the alpha mare and it was her way of showing dominance - or sometimes just excitement

she is shire x tb i think.

she seems to do the kicking/biting/head shaking/flank looking all together which can be a bit dangerous as shes not looking where she is going while doing it.
