can anyone give me some advice on what else i can do to stop my DeerhoudXgreyhound from peeing in the house at nights, He's 8yrs now and iv had him for 7yrs i ask a vet about it but he said because of his age in might be a bit risky and also it might not work as it could be learnt behaviour now, but he could inject him and see if it would work (big risk on my purse and his health if it dont work) he doesnt do it every night so i marked the calander to see if there was a pattern but no pattern. he does have a seperation problem (to me) but he can always get to me at night (unless he thinks im dead when im asleep lol) he usualy goes out at about 10pm but will get me up at least once in the night but he's usualy peed by then, during the day he has accsess to the garden whenever he likes, hes fed at 7am and again at 6pm and has water down all the time (not that he goes mad for either) im very careful about cleaning up the pee straight away and dont use anything with amonia in it so theres no trace left for him to sniff out. im really desparate now so any advice would be very welcome thanks,

Has this started recently or has it always been the case? You do not say in your post.

I assume your vet has already dismissed by testing factors such as bladder infection; impaired kidney and / or liver function; hpyothroidism (sighthounds can have a lower thyroid reading and the very end of the scale may affect bladder incontinence). If your vet has not already done one or all of these I would either ask them why, or change vets.

Sorry yes he has always had this problem, the vet gave him a thorough check up and everything ok. its just so soul distroying when you get up and he peed again, as i say its not every night and he asks to go out in the day so he knows when he wants to go. iv started doing his walks in the evening to see if that works rather than walking him in the mornings, he's such a lovely dog other wise.

So it is habit. Fixing him would have not effect. I think you are doing the right thing changing his exercise routine to the evening, hopefully he will get all his marking out of the way for the night! He may just not be tired enough to sleep through the night and wakes up and fidgits and ends up having to pee. Does he crate? If so I would also crate him at night.

Thanks, i surpose i'll just have to wait and see. No he don't crate, we did try years ago but he ended up having his foot stitched when he panicked and riped open his pad, so never tryed it again. Fingers crossed and thanks for the support

Hi,

You say he has access to the garden all day - is this doors left open for him? Because it may be that he simply hasn't learnt that going in the garden is the right place to go. Many dogs that have free access outside all the time never learn the difference and never learn to ask. If there are no medical reasons for him peeing over night, I'd go back to basic housetraining as it sounds as if he's never learnt where the right place to go is. Start as if he's a puppy again, and escort him into the garden at key times he's likely to need to wee (after waking, after eating etc) and reward him with some big tasty treats every time he goes outside. If it's never been made rewarding enough to wee outside as oppossed to indoors, that might be all the problem is, and once he realises it's good to go outdoors, he might start bottling it up to wait til he can go outside in the mornings!

Best Wishes,
Shelley.
