I have just recently bought rubber matting for my pony Ellie from stable-mats.com.

So far I have found it brilliant and it has saved me a lot of money as I only have to use a

small amount of shavings.

A friend of mine is also looking to buy some but she wanted more details than I was able to

give having only had my mats for around 6 months. She wanted to know how long they last for

instance.

Does anyone else use rubber matting? How long have you been using it and does it still have

a lot of great benefits? How long does it last?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Jane

I've had my mats for about 5 years so far and they are still in really good nic. I only have them across the front of my stable where there is no bedding, and that's where the horse stands most of the time to eat her haynet. She is shod, and the mats have stood up to this well. I have concrete under the mats - that's what prompted me to get them as the floor was becoming smooth and slippery and I didn't want it to cause an accident. The rubber has provided good grip and helped to avoid scuffed hocks etc when my horse lies down.

Did you get the 17mm ones? We have some thinner ones elsewhere on the yard which are OK but a bit lightweight so they slip around. Definitely worth the extra for the heavy ones IME.

As with most things you can buy cheap and expensive and everything in between. The last yard I was at fitted superb quality thick green mats in all the livery stables. I expect it will last forever. I've got bog standard black mats, pebble finish on top, little channels underneath to help the wet drain away. £39 each, needed 3 I think it was for the front third of Sunny's stable. Back 2 thirds is deep litter shavings. Whole lot been down going on 3 years and no sign of wear and tear at all.
