Help! New (first) pony arrives on Monday and I'm sure I've forgotten something

Thank you, this thread has been really helpful.

He arrives this afternoon and I feel sick with excitement!

Have changed the feed to Happy Hoof and will hardly be giving him any as the grass still looks excellent.

As this is your first pony and the owner has not been feeding him, then neither should you! A recipe for disaster. Give yourself at least a couple of months before introducing any hard food so you can both really get to know each other. Pasture mix is not the best feed for a native anyway - too much sugar. As others have said, a good quality pony nut should be plenty.

I am a novice pony owner/loaner but I will SECOND THIS!!!!

I felt bad that my pony (Dartmoor) wasnt having a "meal" when she came in from the field in the evening and gave her molasses free chaff...........SILLY MISTAKE. I also gave her a settling in period.....again a SILLY MISTAKE.

She has however calmed down alot and I have had her a month now. She lives off grass and a haynet.

It is a very exciting time but dont panic about stuff too much. I literally had a couple of items and already have got loads of stuff (much to my partners dispare). Hope you have lots of fun :)

Enjoy, but the butter-won't-melt behaviour MAY disappear. My advice (having a NF too) is stick to your guns and absolutely always expect good behaviour - at the very first sign of bad manners tell off firmly. Our NF if you give an inch he takes a mile (if he can, we just don't let him!). Our NF respects any behavioural boundaries set so long as they're reinforced - he's always just testing them!

This everyone has covered but I would say

* Head torch- so handy
* Multi-tool - my husband bought me a one for christmas, it has pliers, screw drivers, bottle open/emergency hoof pick, knife. I use mine almost every day- so useful.
* Lunge line- useful in many ways but great to get any pop out before you first sit on.
* First aid kit
* Spare head collar and rope for the car- I've used my back up to catch a couple of lose horses in my time, but also just incase your boy needs it.
* Post lots of pictures so we can all see him! :D

The rest you can get along the way- Have fun!

He's lovely! A really friendly little chap, very curious and playful. We've done nothing with him bar fussing over him and changing his rugs and picking his feet out but he has been very good. Haven't had to be strict with him yet, he doesn't seem to barge or fidget too much. He chases you if you call him and run away :D
