I tried backing my gelding after a couple of years of not riding, been lunging him constantly and has been absolutely great. When I tried to back him though, and he was fine when he was just standing there but when he was asked to walk on he just span around and tried to get me off.
Is there anything else I can do except just keep trying? Baring in mind, he does have a new saddle.
Thanks.

Do you mean you're re-backing him because he hasn't been ridden for a couple of years or is this your first attempt at backing him after you haven't ridden for a couple of years?

WHichever it is are you certain his saddle is correctly fitted and you need to take him back ot a stage in his training where he was completely confident and happy, re-examine what you have done to him since then and then recommence his training from that point on, correcting any errors you may have made and making sure he is confident and happy at every stage.

Do you have someone on the ground who can walk at the side of you once you are on and see if he will walk a few strides with you in the saddle and ride him on the lunge

If you don't know how to solve this issue, and what to do next, you really shouldn't be backing a horse. Take the horse to an experienced professional backer with a good reputation, and get them to do the job. Backing a horse is not something to take on lightly and there are many experienced professional riders who do not do the backing themselves. Asking an internet forum for help really shows up your lack of experience and knowledge in the area. Please get a professional backer before it gets ugly.
