Hi I'm Jenna,
Long story short I rode from age 4 until 24. Some traumatic events later (not horse related) I stopped ridding. Ended up ill and on medication that increased my weight and turned me into a fatty :p
Fast forward 5 years I've moved to Nottingham, bought my own house, have a great job training assistance dogs and last week stopped the medication.

Now I would love to get back into horse riding but I realise at my current weight riding schools arent equipped! My ideal situation is I would love to share and then in the future if this promotion comes off at work buy my own. But don't want to go into a share or look to buy until Ive had some lessons again and learnt how much I have forgotten. So that has meant I need to wait until my weight is down (4lbs lost this week Yay!)

I was thinking about offering people help with horse care just to get my hand back in until I can ride but don't know anyone locally and have no idea where to start in looking for someone who will let me help but not take the Mickey. Help! :)

Well done on making such life affirming decisions OP. :) One way to get into the horse world again, which would help you to get back into it all would be to contact your local Riding for the Disabled group, they always welcome extra helpers and can be a good way to meet people with a shared interest, some won't run over the winter months, but some do. The other thing to do is see if there is a local riding club and go to one of their meetings to meet like minded people, who may want some help with jobs. Good luck and keep us updated :)

Good lord. Your story is so much like mine it's freakin' spooky! (TFC - I promise I don't have multiple accounts!) I'm in about the same place with it as you right now too, maybe just a little further along. (20lbs down for me but a lot more to go yet.)

Is there an equine rescue charity or similar nearby you could volunteer with? I do volunteer work with an operation that re-educates and re-homes OTT thoroughbreds. It's been a great way to reconnect with horses, it's very hands on and physical work (good for the weight loss!), I'm remembering old things and using my old knowledge as well as learning new things. Being a volunteer thing you give your time when you've got it to give, so it's easier to fit it in around your job. I come home exhausted, filthy and stinking. And I'm the happiest I've been in years.

Nobody takes the mickey because of my size either. Do the work and do it well, that's all anyone cares about because it's all about the horses, not me. Maybe I've been lucky with that. I wish you the same.

Thanks everyone for the positive messages and ideas.

The RDA is a great idea as my day job is working with disabled people but unfortunately the ones round me from what I can see run right in the middle of the day so don't fit in with my day job

A riding school has got back to me saying they have horses that take 16 stone beginners....need to get home and weigh all my riding clothes and boots to find out how much they weigh so can figure out how far off I am. That target can hopefully be achieved fairly soon which will be motivating!

Will need to do a search for rescue places as could be an option also :)
