My mum sadly has to find a home for her 25yr old appaloosa mare, this is a forced issue due to financial restraints! She cannot be ridden, well maybe very lightly, probably best as a companion horse. She has had foot and back problems but is generally a very well happy horse.

Does anyone have any advice about how to do this or anyone to contact.

My mum lives in Northampton but will be moving to Norfolk so i think she would like to be able to visit.

i would try the veteran horse society. they help you in finding a loan home for the horse and you keep ownership

This is a difficult situation and one faced by many owners of oldies. Your mum needs to think very hard about where her mare goes. There are far more companion horses than there are homes that need companions. She may be very lucky and find someone who will take on an old horse and all the expense that might mean in the future. On the other hand, it might be kinder to simply have the mare PTS rather than face the upheaval of a new home and an uncertain future. Sorry to paint a bleak picture - but too many old horses end up in dreadful circumstances.

Are you having a laugh?

If the vetran societies won't take her home, your mother is best advised to put the mare down. At that age, she certainly does not deserve to moved on to what could become an unsavory life for an old timer, and in these cases euthenising is the best option.
