Where abouts are you Young eventer?
I think your very responsible trying to learn as much as possible before hand. Getting a horse is a massive commitment. I had my first pony and kept him at his old owners livery yard for the first few years on DIY but always had help on hand if needed so id definitely recommend that- I learnt so much that way. A yard with other people your age (how old are you?) would also be really good as the fun aspect I think is also important- My daughters 13 and I think she gets a bit bored it being just me and her at the yard!
Magazines are a good way of learning about all aspects of horse care/riding ownership.
Good luck xxx
