Hi!

I am a 3rd year Equine Dental Science student at Hartpury college.
This year I am required to do a dissertation.

My dissertation is titled:
The effect of dental maintenance on faecal fibre length in horses.

To enable efficient digestion of the diet a horse must be able to chew long stem fibre and reduce its length. Preliminary observations suggest that dentition in malocclusion (pre maintenance) is less efficient at reducing fibre length, than when in alignment (post maintenance). The aim of this project is to establish the amplitude of this difference, and to examine if it varies according to the severity of the malocclusion present.

I was wondering if anyone may be kind enough to participate in my study? We are looking for around 50 horses, hopefully horses that have dental abnormalities or have not been seen incredibly regularly (as we would like to study the more serious dental malocclusion's.....not just a few sharp points! Although we will take into account some regular dental patients in order to make the study more applicable to the equine industry).

The aim is to arrive with the Equine Dental Technician, collect a faecal sample, the EDT will carry out the dental treatment whilst the researcher fills out the dental chart. the Researcher will need to come back in 2 weeks to collect another faecal sample.

Participants will remain anonymous, and information given will be used for research purposes only. The participant can withdraw from the study at any time.

So if anyone is planning on having their horses teeth done in Somerset or Gloucester shire around January time then please let me know! I am hoping to go out with Simon Pratley (Glos), Toby Lee (Somerset) and hopefully a couple of other EDT's that I have not yet asked!

Thank you for your time!

OOO I was planning on asking Toby Lee to come and do my horses teeth in Jan (she needs them done asap as they were meant to be done in Aug!) I know im a terrible mother but i havent dont much/if any riding and she is ok atm I just know she needs them done!

I havent used him before but he was highly recommended by the YO....

She has a wave formation and when i asked the vet to check her quickly a few weeks ago he said ramps were forming? she is 17 and i think her teeth have been quite neglected in the past...i do try and get her teeth done every 6 months but money has been tight (no excuse i know) and i havent been able to with people being on hols and work etc!

So i might be interested!

i am in south wales if thats any use to you, my mare needs her teeth doing, i havent have her long and wouldnt have thought they have been done before and she is 10! also on her face is a lump which is thought to be a floating tooth if that comes under abnormalities?!! Pm me if you like

I have 4 horses - one is a rising 2yo who has not been done yet (was checked 9 months ago), a 4yo and 11yo who were done 9 months ago and a 6yo who is reasonably new to me and hasn't had them done for possibly 12-18months.

I was planning ti have Victoria Hammond out to them, and am based just outside of Newent so will be nice and handy for you!

Hello, thank you for your interest.....your mare sounds very interesting! I think I would definitely class a suspected floating tooth as a dental abnormality! However South Wales would mean too much traveling for me as I live around Somerset/Gloucestershire.

I am doing my dissertation with another girl who actually lives in Brigend...if this is closer?

I may tell her to advertise on horse and hound as well...get as many participants as we can!

I have also been drawn to my previous explanation of my dissertation.....this study will not mean any free dental treatment...I am aiming to collect any data from willing participants that are already planning on getting the equine dentist out in January at their own expense....sorry for any confusion!

Thank you
