Need some advice!!! Has anyone had a horse with a pedal bone wing fracture? What treatment was taken?
I have the option of an operation to put screw in or just to leave alone? Don't know what to do!

Can't help much here.

Foaly somehow broke the palmar process of the pedal bone. We pts though so did not go through with any treatments.

We were advised by Newmarket vets, so took their lead on this

Our 2yo chipped his earlier this year, but it's slightly different with youngsters as their bones are still soft and they reabsorb really easily. We didn't have any 'treatment' as such, we just kept him yarded on a soft surface until he'd healed. It was scary though because, even though our vet was really confident that he'd get better, he was very lame at the time. It is apparently a very common injury in youngsters - handbrake turns in the field with soft growing bones means the ligaments can pull bits off them. And he's back to doing those handbrake turns from gallop in the field now....

Older horses can be a bit more tricky and it depends on the location of the fracture. I'd be guided by your vet, I think. Our vet did say that pedal bone fractures were the one lameness scenario where you might want shoes because you actually want that cast effect while the bone heals, but obviously with our chap only being little that wasn't an option.
