as some of u well kno my TB mare abby is now only going to have the winter off to try and let her body recover from all her absesses etc tht she's had in the past year and then she's only going to be used as a light hack ( still hoping tht she will be able to do more, but trying not to get my hopes up)

since being off she is feeling better than ever i've never seen her so happy an playful in the field and we have had no further problems since ive not been riding her which is great............ but she is going totally mad when i bring her in/ put her in the stable, she's trying to barge her way out, dancing about when leading her, and tanking off when i get to the field. obviously this is due to her having so much excess energy so i'm just wondering if there is anything i could do to alter her feed? she currently gets:

1 scoop of speedibeet
1 scoop of conditioning mix
her NAF superflex
and well she is turned out 24/7 till winter hits

she's been fed this once a day and she has held her weight and condition brilliantly through all her problems this year and she's a good weight for going into the winter

any ideas would be greatly appreciated??

do u think its worth lunging her in the field gently??

Personally I would feed her a fibre based diet, something like unmollassed chaff (like Hifi), with oil added for condition. I wouldn't give her a mix as this is not great if she's prone to ulcers. I'd also want to make sure she always had plenty to eat, be it grass in the field or hay, just make sure she never spends more than a few hours without feed (ideally fibre) as this is when ulcers can occur. There are some new feeds out by Winergy which would probably be good for her. Also there is a supplement called U-Guard, I think by Equine America which may be of benefit. Also I would cut out the speedibeet to stop her having too much energy. Has the vet advised you not to exercise her?

Just to add, if you do decide to go down the very minimalistic route of chaff, oil and hay (rather than a prepared feed), I would add a balancer too, something like Bailey's Lo-cal, so you know she's getting all her vitamins and minerals, and also dampen her feed so it is a bit easier on the digestive system.

Hope this helps

I would remove the mix completely. Keep the unmollassed sugar beet with high oil chaff like d&h fibergy or alfalfa chaff. Increase to 2x or 3x feeds a day if needed. Plus ad lib hay

If she needs more because of her weight then topspec conditioning cubes are similar energy levels to a mix but very low starch, which is usually the culprit for silly behaviour.

its not ulcers she gets abseses in her feet which has cause her to have extremely soft soles she is developing arthritis as well

she was a 2/3* eventer back in her hay day (excuse the pun ) so she has worked hard her life so i'm quite happy for her to relax and take some time out.

farrier also thinks she has had stress lamimitus??? which has caused her soles to drop. found that out yesterday

I would definately not feed any cereals to a horse who may have had laminitis, however it was caused. recurring absesses are a common problem following laminitis.

Hope you can sort her out, good luck

Sorry read it completely wrong! I'd still give her a fibre based diet though, too help her chill out. Could you try her on a hoof supplement to help her feet?
