A freind has asked me to plait up her horses - which is no problem but I cant remember .... Is it even down the neck and fore makes it odd number or the other way round ?

Odd down the neck and forelock makes it even is the traditional rule. The thought being that an evan number of plaits down the neck will split it half way and make it look like 2 halves.

In practise I just try to keep my plaits an even width, plait the neck 'up' (some people call these hooded plaits) and see how many come out, it is often an odd number but not always.

odd plus forelock to make even! though for hunting i dont think anyone counts .. just nicely plaited and well turnout, clean and shiny! if looking at old school tradition hunters should be plaited with 7 (???!) plaits and forelock!
I just plait up neatly til i have run out of mane!!
