Good Evening..

My mare came in tuesday morning with several scabby wounds on her back legs (2 each leg - one etiher side), face (muzzle, side of face and underneath) and chest (going under her armpits) and on her udder. They were oozing orange liquid but she didnt seem in much pain - still her usual self but her back legs are swollen. Called vet who prescribed bute and to wash the wounds with hibiscrub (gently). They seem to scab over and then drop off leaving open wounds. I was wondering if anyone had seen this before? Nothing in her routine has changed apart from a supplement has been added for her mood swings which was started 3 weeks ago. I was wondering if they could be due to the supplement or is more likely to be from something in her field that she may have rolled/laid in? I have some pics of one leg and the other areas are similiar:

If anyone has any advice would be much appreciated

Hi, I never usually reply but yes, one of my mares had a mysterious allergic reaction like yours. It started under her belly, then it grew really big for a couple of day's and was very scabby and swollen. At the same time she got oozy scabs all down her throat, two on her face identical to your horse. One on her mane and one on her bottom. They did not seem sore or itch and she did not seem under the weather. I cleansed them with iodene and boiled water and then used alo-vera propolis. Also one danilion a day for 5 day's. Today I was giving her a brush and found the reminents of sticky yellow scabs on the dock of her tail. I took me ages to brush them out and I was so suprised that I had missed this one. None of my other horses were affected and they live in a small heard. She is fine now and all healed up.

thank you for reply

yes it is very mysterious - ive had a few horsey people down who are puzzled by it. does seem to look worse than it is I think and shes not worried by it hopefully will heal up shortly :)

thanks again

Hi Becky - I'm so glad you've posted this as I've had something very similar happen to my new boy in the last few days....

On Sunday he was particularly itchy on his off side hind leg. He couldn't get in a position to scratch it so I did it for him (just above hock on outside of hind leg). Then on Tuesday I noticed this.....

All scabby and yucky. I've washed it clean and it seems to be healing fine. He doesn't have any swelling and isn't at all bothered by it now. No other similar scabs and they would show up quite easily on a grey. I've been hunting high and low in his stable and paddock for something he could have caught himself on and found nothing. He couldn't have done it to himself as it was in a place he couldn't reach. Looks very similar to what your horse has. We have the odd buttercup in the field, but hardly any. And we don't have horse flies here, but do have midges and other small flies. All very odd indeed. My other two don't seem to have anything similar.

Aloe Vera gel works wonders for this kind of stuff. The second photo of the gray I would say is likely a bite of some kind as it is a one off.

The first, my pony gets these sores from sunshine - but there are a multitude of causes
