Good Evening..

My mare came in tuesday morning with several scabby wounds on her back legs (2 each leg - one etiher side), face (muzzle, side of face and underneath) and chest (going under her armpits) and on her udder. They were oozing orange liquid but she didnt seem in much pain - still her usual self but her back legs are swollen. Called vet who prescribed bute and to wash the wounds with hibiscrub (gently). They seem to scab over and then drop off leaving open wounds. I was wondering if anyone had seen this before? Nothing in her routine has changed apart from a supplement has been added for her mood swings which was started 3 weeks ago. I was wondering if they could be due to the supplement or is more likely to be from something in her field that she may have rolled/laid in? I have some pics of one leg and the other areas are similiar:

If anyone has any advice would be much appreciated

Thank you - Also in Veterinary as unsure where to go

Could be very bad horsefly bites. We had a horse on yard come out in similar last summer. He was manically itchy with them tho-tried to rub himself raw. Vet prescribed usual creams to apply & 20 piriton a day whilst he was itchy. He was sorted within a few
days. Initial wounds looked like big puncture wounds, like a snake had bitten him in places! Poor pony :(

Do you have buttercups in your field? As these can 'burn' legs and face with prolonged exposure to them. Not all horses/ponies get it. I am lucky, my mare gets a bit swollen under her chin, but doesnt 'burn'.
That or it could be excessive scrating,...but odd its only on one leg and face.

Thank you for replies :o

Yes we thought fly bites too with this random weather were having! so shes in with a fly rug on - no other horses have symtoms and shes one of 4 out of 11 with fly rug on  lol

And also butter cups as there are some in one feild, but hasnt been in that feild recently as weather has been quite bad. We thought maybe had laid down in something as seems to be in places that would touch ground.

Also thought mud fever, but she had a touch of it early this year but it doesnt seem the same and just sprang up over night :( or the supplement thing :(

The horse at our yard that got savaged by the horseflies was in a field with 2others (and with 5 other horses in adjacent fields) and no other horse was bitten like that/had that reaction:-/ He'd never had it before and hasn't since (yet! Have seen a few pretty big horse flies this week!)

If you think that the supplement is a possible cause, the best thing is to stop the supplement and see what happens.
After several mishaps with supplements, we have stopped feeding any compound supplements and now will only feed single ingredients which we have researched thoroughly. We have had several horses which have been sensitive to a variety of different things, including supplement ingredients.

bless :( my mare is really itchy and lumpy atm....its always mares! ! ! ive been told lots of good ideas from people on here, i woukldnt have thought it was the supplemnt, not after 3 weeks tbh but hey, horses are a pain in the bum....i wish they could talk lol

anyway, hope she gets better soon :)

Posting the same reply here as the one I made in the veterinary section.....

Hi Becky - I'm so glad you've posted this as I've had something very similar happen to my new boy in the last few days....

On Sunday he was particularly itchy on his off side hind leg. He couldn't get in a position to scratch it so I did it for him (just above hock on outside of hind leg). Then on Tuesday I noticed this.....

All scabby and yucky. I've washed it clean and it seems to be healing fine. He doesn't have any swelling and isn't at all bothered by it now. No other similar scabs and they would show up quite easily on a grey. I've been hunting high and low in his stable and paddock for something he could have caught himself on and found nothing. He couldn't have done it to himself as it was in a place he couldn't reach. Looks very similar to what your horse has. We have the odd buttercup in the field, but hardly any. And we don't have horse flies here, but do have midges and other small flies. All very odd indeed. My other two don't seem to have anything similar.

thank you for replies :)

yes last time had supplement was Sunday so that has been stopped.

nikicb that does look pretty similar actually, and hers are itchy as if got her trying to itch her face as only ones she can get to :( still none the wiser as to what caused it but think must be bad reaction to fly bite. They seem to scab, then drop off leaving wound then heal up normally (fingers crossed), unfortunatly is going to leave several good sized bald patchs for a while

My mare once had this sort of reaction when I turned out in a paddock she hadn't been in before. Like yours, the sores looked likely to be in places where she has layed down in something!
My vet said this was most likely and we never turned her out in that paddock again, and she never had the reaction again do eith mine it was definitely some sort of allergic reaction to something in that paddock!
