Hello

I wanted a pair of Ariat cowboy boots, looking into the designs they normally have a boot top of 12 inchs diameter, some are 13.5 or 14.

They are still too narrow for me :(:( muscley legs are a nightmare!

I am happy to go for a shorter cowboy boot, normally cowboy boots are 11-12inches tall, as I am short I am happy to go for a 7 or 9 inch tall boot.

I am a UK 6, that will be a US 8.5 (ladies) could I buy a mans boot? would that make the calf area wider?

Does anyone have ideas on makes, brands, types and where to buy from.

Any info please?

Thank you so much, I really really want a pair of cowboy boots, any make I am getting desperate, lol.

I've got sturdy 16'' calves and have a pair of Grinders Renegades, they are great tough boots, they measure 10'' from top of heel to top of boot and are 14'' at the top of the boot (in a size 41) Got them on ebay.

Depending on how much wear you want to get out of them, a pair of "fashion" cowboy boots might work for you. I wanted some for a ranch holiday, but dealing with my massive calves and the fact that I wont buy leather was a nightmare. Eventually found some cheap fashion ones that werent marketed for riders (cant remember the site now), but fit my calves with room to spare. I doubt they would last as long as a proper pair of leather ones, but if you only want to wear them occasionally it should be fine. Mine stood up really well to a week of constant wea for riding, climbing hills etc. (And once you get a bit of dust on them, you cant really tell that they werent really made for cowboys)

Have a look at the shorter, roper style boots rather than the taller Western boots - I wear Ariat Pro-Baby boots which measure 8 1/2 in from heel to rear of boot shaft, 10 in top to bottom on the side. These are great if you want to ride in them - not all Western boots are suitable for riding, some are fashion only.

There must be Western Saddle Stores in the UK, they would surely stock them?

I know that my local store has hundreds of pairs of boots, from teeny tiny ones for toddlers up to serious 4 figure jobbies and everything in between! Mine are just bog standard black ones that get worn daily in summer.

SHeplers are definitely the way to go - I buy my Ariat heritage cowboy boots from there and save a fortune - between £60 and £80 depending on exchange rates - including delivery. Once I had to pay tax but not the other times - and the tax was about £20 so still saved money and got the boot I wanted. However, I would suggest you gave them a call during their working hours to find out which boot and size you need as they are obviously American sizings and they would be able to recommend something for you.

yes there are western saddle stores in the uk, eg sovereign quarter horses in cambs. westernscene-uk.com to name a couple. also have a look at wes-uk.com or the westernhorseuk magazine which is on sale in wh smiths across the country.

Thank you all for your advice, I am off to research all that you suggested.

I love the Ariat, Fatbaby, showbaby, ranchbaby and rodeobaby just wished they had the traditional (cuban type) heel. If these boots were worn with jeans on the outside, with the normal english type square heel they will look like english boots. :(

Fingers crossed I can find a boot soon.

The underslung riding heel will kill your back if you spend a long time on your feet, the roper heel of the Fatbaby boot is way more comfortable, as for looking like an english boot ... not these babies :) :)

WOW! They are really bright!

Thank you for your comment regarding the underslung heel hurting my back - I didnt think of that.

I think I am going to go for the Ariat Showbaby, really nervous about buying from the USA - never done that before.

Oooo yes, and sparkly too.

You will need to know your American size there is a chart here http://www.mukluks.org/shoe-sizes.htm which might help.

There are retailers in the UK who carry a smallish stock of boots, if you wanted something specific they would probably have to order it in for you anyway. Sheplers are brilliant to deal with, you may well be charged duty on them when they come in, or not, depending on the mood of the Royal Mail sorting office.

i have ariat cowboy boots and they were fine on my calves when they were 16".... they did scrunch down a little bit but i wear them under boot cut jeans so you can't tell ;)
i've lost weight since then and they are now loose :)
i also now wear ariat bromonts in a wide calf which fit me - not sure of my current calf width though... but to give you an idea - i can now wear dubarrys - before they wouldn't go even half way up my legs and i had to have the zip up version - wexford i think they are called
