Help please! Fly repellent supplement in feed?

Hi! Need some help! A friends horse is suffering badly with fly bites, but has the usual fly spray, fly sheet! My friend saying she wants a supplement she can feed the horse, so any suggestions? Of something that can be put in the feed and help with flys!
 
Garlic isn't that great, your better off getting a sweetitch rug if he's that bad. If the flys can't touch him there won't be a problem.
 
I've been using "think fly" from briscombe. It seems really good- I bought it because of numerous other people's recommendation. Only problem is my boy isn't a massive fan of the taste. It's alright if I spread the portions across the day though!
 
I use garlic :) or there's global herbs fly free, which is specially formulated to repel flies. A pony at the yard has just gone on this for this exact reason!
 
The only thing I know to work for sweetitch/flies is a lotion called Z-ITCH. It worked on a friends pony who was virtually stable bound, amazing stuff imho.
 
Garlic doesn't do it, try avon skin so soft dry oil. Used neat there's nothing to beat it, you need the green/blue label. |Do a search on it to see how useful this stuff is, the armed forces use it before what they are issued
 
Traditionally people always talked about garlic, but recent thinking is that it isn't that good. I read something about the effect it has on the bacteria in the gut which was detrimental but I cannot find the paper now.

You may find that horses which have cereal and/or molasses in their diet tend to attract more flies. There are a couple in a field next to ours who are fed a pasture mix of some description and they are plastered in flies, whereas ours who often stand next to them don't get bothered hardley at all. We feed no cereals or molasses. Linseed is what ours get a lot of and I'm sure this helps keep the flies off.
 
In my experience GH Fly Free doesn't work on a more hairy New Forest. Just think the flies land and bite anyway and because the hair is in the qay they don't notice he's been eating the Fly Free till after they bite! Works fine on a fine haired arab cross show pony.
 
The Global Herbs supplements are really good - one of ours gets very bad sweetitch, we give him the Skratch supplement and it's fab - definitely makes a huge difference to him.

I have given her lots of garlic and she has a fly rug but she is coming in with big lumps - look like horse fly bites. Even on the days when it's not too warm

I was looking for something to put in her feed which will repel and probably something else to prevent her reaction

:) Have you tried a mixture of cold tea and vinager applied to the skin with a cloth :)
