I need help please. My horses are destroying the post and rail fencing. In several places they have almost chewed through the rails and have taken major chunks out of the posts and i dont know what i can use to stop them. What are the other alternatives to creosote as i know your no longer able to get it any more. I know i'll have to replace some of the rails but cant afford to do them all so if you could let me know whats worked for you then that would be great! Thanks!

you can still get creoste, its called creoste substitute, it smells like the old stuff, jst not meant to be so nasty for the enviroment. (you can still buy the real stuff if your a tradesman which personaly i prefer to the new stuff)

Mine do this in the winter and I worked out that its because in the winter I put them out in a big paddock which has lots of grass. They eat until they are stuffed and then have a rest next to the fence and munch on it. In the summer they don't do it because I have them on much tighter grazing.

Anyhow back to the point, any fence preservative will temporarily stop mine, but if I don't do all of the fence they just move on

The best thing I found was to run the thin electric fence wire along the top of the fence. Doesn't stop them eating the middle rail though

. I usually have to replace a couple of rails every year in the winter paddocks

You could put a line of electric fencing on the fence. If they respect electric fencing they hopefully won't touch it.

Also, have they got a field lick - just in case they are looking for some mineral or other.

Mine will do that on new wood. I found the current Creosote will work (not the same as the old stuff as waterbased) and its easier to put on than Cribox.
