HI, I am new here and have joined for some advice/help after reading some old posts. I have started riding again after a few years break and at a school which has put my confidence lower than it was before i started due to a few scary moments on a very spooky horse (ex-RS sold on for bolting with whoever on its back) which I keep requesting not to ride and every Saturday I rock up I have to ride this horse as the others are busy with the children. I have never seen another adult riding at this yard. I overheard my instructor telling a livery customer that lessons "dont pay and its a waste of his time teaching me as there is no money in it for them". Every time I do ride this horse he spooks on the hack and last time did so when i was WITHOUT an instructor on a road facing a truck. As a beginner needless to say I ended up walking back to the school. When i have my instructor he forgets my name, forgets where I am up to each week or is off "sick" though every week I smell alcohol on his breath. Lol. I have ridden bareback, bitless, western, english and trot independently. Thats where I am up to at the mo. Therefore looking for another riding school which has more professional instructors who are friendly towards beginners. Could anybody help me please? I wish to learn to ride for leisurely hacks with a view to buying my own horse in the near future. Thank you.

You could try Yvonne Lowther's in Sicklinghall (near Wetherby). They have lots of great hacking round there and take a fair few rides out but also have arenas for lessons and a decent mix of horses for varying abilities. I think this is the correct address/contact
Hillcroft Farm, Kirkby Lane, Wetherby LS22 4BP, 01937 582262

Hi, when I lived in Leeds (going back 7 years now) and was doing my BHS exams I used to go to Middleton Park Equestrian Centre in south leeds. No idea if it is even still going but would have recommended it at the time - nice horses and well run so maybe worth a look?

Middleton park is still going but as far as i know its mainly RDA & Children? they have a website

I know of Royds Hall riding school, they used to be alright there inbetween leeds & Wakefield right off the M62

Im not sure if they do hacking though. when you find one fill me in i have a few friends looking at the moment...

Back Lane Riding School, just off tong road on your way to New Farnley. Never learned there myself (moved to Leeds with my own horses) however I know 2 of the instructors well and some of the helpers/stable staff too, a lot of the younger girls on my yard learned there and can't speak highly enough.....plus the instructors always remember you :-)

Thank you for your replies, really appreciated. One of my work colleagues had private lessons at Middleton Park until she bought her own horse recently. She said the horses were lovely but the stable staff were uninterested and that the instructor (she had 1/2 hr private lessons) always cut the lesson by 5 mins even by ten mins sometimes so she never got her full half hour. So visited it myself & wasnt keen on the atmosphere tho the horses looked lovely. Also its a 40 min drive away. Will check out Royds & Back Lane and report it in!:)

Another vote for Yvonne Lowther in Sicklinghall.

I rode there for two years before moving back down south. They have miles of off road hacking and she has some fantastic horses.

Might be a bit further than you hoped - but well worth it! :)

Glad someone else has put in a vote! Yvonne works her a*se off and she is blooming good at what she does and equally good at choosing suitable horses. We (me and my sisters) all started riding there when we were about 5 I think (she was at a different part of Sicklinghall then) and i have also done work experience on the yard. Used to be terrified of yvonne when i was a kid though! Lol

They do have fab hacking and also in the winter the horses (or some of them) get some 'fun time' and get to go hunting etc so they don't turn in to 'dead' riding school plods
