hi,
my 10 month of jrt x chiuhaha back leg is acting very odd.
Just started an hour ago, he has been on his usual walk today, nothing different in his routine.
He gets up and his hind leg flays out erratically behind him and he lays back down. doesnt seem to be in pain but hes distressed by it. any ideas going to take to vet tommorow if it continues. any ideas please, very worried ., thanks

just the one leg. No other symptoms - he itches at it and licks it.
Ive felt all along his back and leg cant find anything and he doesnt mind u touching it. He does not want to walk and when he tries walks a few strides and it happens again.

Im no vet, but could it be a dislocation? Iwould post this in vets too. I'd be inclined to get the vet out today if poss as he is going to have a very uncomfortable night otherwise.

i doubt its dislocated - iv poked and prodded and extended the leg out and he doesnt mind - he would be in lots of pain if it were dislocated?

His routine is usually - up and out for a wee early run around garden, he will come out in garden few times a day for similar, little run sniff round and toilet. He gets either 1 longish walk or 2 smaller ones during the day of round fields or park, not massive walks tho as he is still young. This seems to suit him fine and never had any problems so far.

thanks for your replies..
Iv googled the patella thing, and i know exactly what you mean and have seen JRTs do that before - however i dont think its that.
Hes not hopping or skipping as they describe. Its like a weird spasm his leg violently kicks out to the side and he immediatley sits/lays down to avoid it. His whole backend seems to be a little tucked in and hes carrying his tail low and inwards (like whippets) when usually he has it up and over his back, almost curly. he is definaltley not in pain from it seems worried and upset when it happens.
I dont know if i should call the vet now, hes asleep at the mo and perfectly content apart from when he tries to walk.

Do you have another dog? My old bitch started doing it after my big boy landed on her in excitment in the snow, when he was bouncing around like a loon. She was totally fine after a few hours. If it had lasted longer it would have been a vet visit.
