Help please..mudfever or over reach?

Could a horse that has never over reached before get an over reach injury? Could she get mud fever when she hasn't been standing in the wet at all?
Any ideas what this is please?

Hmm, not sure, but just wanted to say that my mare got some mudfever-type scabs in the spring during a very dry spell, so it does happen without wet mud! Normal mudfever treatment and barrier cream sorted it.

Yes, you can get mud fever even if they havnt stood in the wet. It is caused by a bacteria. It is more common in winter because the skin is softened by the wet but it is also possible in the summer. All the bacteria needs is a tiny hole and they can get into the skin.

I am having real trouble with my mares white feet she is not over reached but looks similiar, reckon it may be a reaction to buttercups but having the devil of a job to clear it up.

Thanks all, don't think it can be a rope burn, it is just possible she got her foot in the electric fencing but it wasn't dislodged so I don't think so.
Milliepops, what did you use for mudfever cream? I have a liquid oily stuff but it hasn't cleared it in a few days. I had some fuciderm for a different horse but can I find it?

Interesting re buttercups as they are just starting..she hasn't reacted in the past but maybe if she had a slight nick?

She needs her jab in the next week so will get vet to have a look.

it looks like cracked heel. my horse gets this, just one big crack, i put barrier cream onit to stop wet getting in and just keep it clean,. apparantly mudfever has been at its worst this year due to the dry weather then wet weather it was doing something to the bacteria in the mud ? dont have a clue, thats just what the vet said hah!
over reaches are more commonley on the bulb of the heel, but they can happen there.

I highly reccomend a good wash with hibiscrub and then Protocon cream to clear it up, dont rub the scabs off at first just rub the cream on gently to soften the skin, then after 3 or 4 days you should see it almost clear up. My big chap has 4 whites!!!!! how pants but I manage it with uddercream daily, to prevent any bacteria getting in.just a little on his heels is fab

I've used sudocrem on my ponys white leg when she had mudfever and it cleaned up a treat.

Hi dizzykizzy,

tbh it doens't look like mudfever as it's completely localised to one area and not following the usual nodules/lumps/bumps you see with mudfever.
With the shape and location of it i wouldn't have thought it would also be an overreach - however dependent on her action etc.. it could be. it doens't look like a clean enough cut to be a strike wound, overreaches are usually lower than that on the heel areas.

It looks like it's been there a while due to the pink raised skin suggesting and evidence of healing, with new tissue has already been made to heal from the outside (it's lovely and clean and dry!) It could just be cracked heels which is now healing, or if she's got her foot caught and pulled backwards and done it that way??

How long has it been there and was it an instant or gradual appearance?

sudocream would be fine, just dab a tiny bit on. or if your fields are dry i would be tempted to just keep it clean and let the air get to it, as it looks like its healing nicely already.

It's greasy heel. Buy some Nizeral from the chemist and dilute some with warm water and lather up well. Leave to dry. This should clear it up in a few days

defo summer mud fever, 10 times more painfull for horses than winter mud fever

looks like something as irrated it to me i would wash it in tea tree shampoo then apply aloe vera jelly no creams or dust mud shavings etc will stick to it!

It doesnt look like an over reach to me. Its more liekly to be something skin related such as mud fever as an unlikely place to over reach into for a start

I use Nettex Muddy Marvel barrier cream - good dollop after cleaning the scabs up.
