Any suggestions ref transsporters ( we are based in Kent), had a look at taking him in my box but the ferry cost was huge - almost £200 just for the ferry!! I couldn't believe what I had heard as it is such a short trip. So I wondered if anyone made the trip in a lorry and may have a space - could bring the boy to meet up with transport to make things more flexible.

Suggestions welcomed - please!

Hello,

Not sure if it helps but for information I brought my horse from near the South of France to the UK with the company LOC 6 months ago and it cost me a bit less than £600.(so very cheap compared to if I had to hire a horse box and do it myself!)
Not sure if they would do IOW but you can contact them and ask them!?

Would a trailer be cheaper, more like the cost of taking a caravan? Can you take him to Portsmouth in your lorry and get someone on the Island to pop over with a trailer and take him back?

I believe there is a carrier that regulary comes across to the Equine Hospital in Hampshire. Maybe ask them if hes coming over soon?
A friend of mine used him last year and then picked up her horse from Hampshire.

The crossing across to the island is probably the most expensive in the UK, if not the world!! When we lived there we had an islanders discount, but it is expensive and a trailer was much cheaper than going with a lorry, however there used to be people who go regulary and there is a vets over that have links with a mainland practice, they might be able to put you in touch with someone, either that or try Sue at Froghill Saddlery, she might know of someone who might be able to help?

Otherwise its going to cost you!

off peak the ferry costs around £80 for a 7.5t lorry..car and trailer around the same..its worked out by how long the vehicle is..this time of year it'll be between £80 - 120 return
